Not many actors in Bollywood have created a legacy as powerful as Suniel Shetty. Ever since his rise to fame in the 1990’s, Shetty has proven to be a beloved Bollywood icon. Whether it’s evil terrorist leaders, comical landowners or menacing gangsters, Shetty has portrayed several powerful characters. Arguably, Shetty’s finest strength as a star has always been his powerful presence. He is one of those rare actors that has always had talent for stealing a show in supporting roles with limited screen-time. Even when he isn’t the main focus of a movie, Shetty often has left a lasting impression. Through ability to play characters audiences can relate to, Shetty has become an actor of great value. Throughout his enduring career, Shetty has made countless unforgettable movies that are definitely worth talking about without a doubt.
I’m a huge fan of Shetty and adore all films which he has made in his career. However, “Main Hoon Na” definitely stands out as his most entertaining movie. Released in 2004, Farah Khan’s iconic film offered a powerful portrait of army generals. Packed with bold musical numbers, engaging storytelling and phenomenal acting, it’s one of the greatest Bollywood action movies ever made. At the centre of it all is an incredible performance by Suniel Shetty, who embodies a terrorism leader in a position of authority. Ultimately, what makes “Main Hoon Naa” a classic is its message. The film delivers a compelling message about the bond between brothers which would resonate with everyone. Unlike most Bollywood movies, it tackles intelligent themes which everyone would relate to. An extraordinary Indian masterpiece, there are several reasons why “Main Hoon Naa” is a movie that is definitely without any doubts worth watching.
“Main Hoon Naa” tells the story of an army major embarking upon a mission to reunite with an estranged brother. Shah Rukh Khan portrays Major Ram Sharma, a committed army general with strong devotion towards completing a mission. Ram’s life drastically transforms when he is sent on a frightening mission to find his brother that is estranged. Aiming to disguise himself as an adolescent college student, Ram strives to complete a mission with powerful commitment. Initially, Ram is excited by the prospect of reuniting with his brother. However, Ram soon finds that his mission isn’t going to be as easy as he thought it would be. Facing a frightening dilemma, Ram struggles to reconnect with his brother that is completely different from him in personality. Trapped in a threatening situation, Ray soon questions whether it’s possible for him to accomplish his lifelong mission.
Farah Khan is a newcomer to the stories of college students. Before she crafted “Main Hoon Naa”, Khan had never ever crafted a Bollywood movie in her career before. It was the director’s first attempt to convey barrier faced by army generals, but she succeeded. Through captivating cinematography, Khan captures lives of college students that fall in love. Khan deftly uses montages to capture the bonds between a pair of close brothers reuniting after many years of separation in a college. Khan effectively uses montages to capture bonds between brothers attending the college. For instance, montages elevate the “Main Hoon Naa” music number. During this memorable scene, Ram forms a strong bond with his brother acting as a source of support. One appreciates musical montages capturing the strong bonds between a pair of brothers. Montages are complex to use in classic Bollywood films. As Aditya Chopra’s “Dilwale Dulhania Ley Jayenge” suggested, montages enhance classic Indian romance movies. That being said, it works immensely in this film. Through stunning visuals, Khan captures the frightening tensions army men are facing.
Another strong aspect of “Main Hoon Naa” is music sequences. From a technical point of view, the film is very well made. Khan has always excelled at staging musical numbers for films, and “Main Hoon Naa” is certainly no exception. Khan successfully uses slow motion to meticulously stage bold musical sequences which capture bonds between a pair of brothers. For instance, slow motion enhances the “Gori Gori” music sequences. During this heartfelt scene, Ram bonds with his brother at a college party. One admires slow motion that captures the long lasting bonds of brothers. Slow motion is often a tricky technique to utilize in Indian movies. As Sanjay Gadhvi’s “Dhoom” claimed, slow motion elevates action films. Nevertheless, it works immensely in this movie. Moreover, the musical score is magnificent. Pritam’s music is integral toward the success of the movie. It gives the movie an extraordinary atmosphere capturing the bonds between brothers carrying a heavy burden to bear. Through phenomenal production-design, Khan captures the lives of army generals that face decline.
Storytelling is one of the primary reasons why “Main Hoon Naa” is an Indian classic which is compelling. The film is beautifully written, and effectively uses flashbacks to capture the lives of army generals that are separated from their close brothers. Khan’s strength as a screenwriter is her abilities to capture the strong bonds of brothers which never decline. Throughout the movie, Khan effectively uses flashbacks to capture the lives of estranged brothers that experience hardships. For instance, flashbacks elevate the memories scene. During this memorable scene, Ram recounts fond memories of his tough childhood of being separated from his brother. Flashbacks are tricky techniques to use in Bollywood movies. As Aamir Khan’s “Dil Chahta Hai” proved, flashbacks elevate Indian movies about friendships. That being said, it works extremely in this film. Through a fantastic screenplay, Khan captures the hardships faced by army generals living in India today.
One appreciates amazing performances.
Suniel Shetty delivers one of his best career performances as Raghavan. Shetty earned appreciation for playing brave action heroes in classic Bollywood films. With “Main Hoon Naa”, however, the actor took upon his most villainous role. It isn’t easy to portray an evil terrorist leader that causes catastrophe but he succeeds tremendously. This is the actor unlike you’ve ever seen him before: intense, emotional and menacing in his most forceful role. With mesmerizing expressions, Shetty embodies the angst, frustrations and strong nature of a terrorist leader that causes the world to face tensions. It’s an extraordinary performance from one of the most beloved actors in India today.
While the movie is mainly a bold showcase for Shetty, the supporting cast is excellent and worthy of recognition. Shah Rukh Khan is spectacular, bringing charisma towards an army general seeking to discover a sad truth about his estranged brother. Zayed Khan is captivating, capturing the reckless nature of a rebellious college student with great comic timing. Lastly, Amrita Rao is remarkable. As an angst college student, she is unforgettable.
Finally, “Main Noo Haa” will earn attention of everyone for capturing bonds between a pair of brothers in India. Unlike Bollywood movies, it tackles themes everyone would relate to. The film tackles themes including identity, marriage and education that would resonate amongst everyone. Viewers aren’t required to be Indian to enjoy the movie. It delivers a message about bonds between brothers that would resonate with everyone. As someone sharing a strong bond with my brother, I related with the movie. Therefore, “Main Hoon Na” is one of those Bollywood movies everyone will adore.
Fans of Suniel Shetty will definitely appreciate “Main Hoo Naa” and so will movie-goers seeking heartwarming entertainment. A captivating Indian classic, it celebrates a legendary actor that has built a legacy which is iconic.
Nearly 20 years following the release of a groundbreaking Bollywood film about dedicated army generals embarking on missions to protect colleges from terrorists that are terrifying, it’s a riveting reminder about a legendary Indian actor that has gained a fan following achieving global recognition for his abilities to portray characters that are compelling whose unforgettable movies are definitely without a doubt worth celebrating.
