‘A Captivating Comedy’
Few actors in Bollywood are as beloved as Shah Rukh Khan. Ever since his recognition in the 1990’s, Khan has become one of the greatest actors in the film industry. Whether it is star-crossed lovers, gangs or doomed superheroes, Khan has proven he can play many characters. Arguably, Khan’s finest strength as an actor has always been his charisma. He has often been of those rare actors with the abilities to use his charisma to attract audiences to theatres. Through his abilities to play characters which prove to be compelling, Khan has created a bold legacy that’s lasting. Known as the Badshah of Bollywood, Khan has stood test of time as a celebrated icon that’s beloved in Indian Cinema. Despite having reached the age of retirement, Khan hasn’t lost his passions for making engaging entertainment. An icon in India, Khan has become a bold actor whose movies commonly attract audiences to the Cinema. Throughout his long-lasting career, Khan has appeared in several unforgettable movies which are definitely without a doubt worth watching.
I’m a big fan of Shah Rukh Khan and adore all l movies that he has made in his career. However, “Dunki” definitely stands out as his most meaningful film. Released in 2023, Rajkumar Hirani’s movie offered a powerful portrait of illegal immigration. Packed with breathtaking musical sequences, engaging storytelling and phenomenal acting, it’s an incredible Indian social drama. At a centre of it all is an extraordinary performance by Shah Rukh Khan, who embodies a soldier that embarks on expeditions of immigration. Although “Dunki” is a dazzling Bollywood drama, it isn’t a flawless film. It builds to a melodramatic conclusion that lacks great resolution. Nevertheless, it offers engaging entertainment that will definitely without a doubt satisfy fans of SRK.
“Dunki” tells the story of four friends which embark upon an illegal immigration journey. Shah Rukh Khan portrays Hardy Singh, an Indian solider that guides individuals upon a journey of immigration. When he meets up with four individuals that are desperate to travel to England, Hardy is given a chance to make his dreams true. A powerful leader, Hardy guides the four individuals through a journey of extreme danger. Faced with one battle after another, Hardy questions if it’s possible for him to reach a destination that involves danger. As he discovers the harsh realities of illegal immigration, Hardy begins to question whether he will ever be able to reach the destination.
Rajkumar Hirani is fascinated with themes of leadership. A brilliant Bollywood director, Hirani has often made great movies about leaders in positions of power. His iconic film “3 Idiots” offered a captivating portrayal of college students that are guided by a strong leader. With “Dunki”, however, Hirani made his first ever immigration drama. It marked the filmmaker’s first attempt to capture the struggles faced by individuals embarking on an illegal immigration journey but he pulled it off expertly. Using strong cinematography, Hirani captures a leader guiding individuals on an immigration journey. Evoking Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi”, Hirani successfully uses montages to capture individuals that embark upon a tough journey. For instance, montages enhance the immigration scene. During this memorable scene, Hardy meets his four accomplices seeking to embark on a perilous journey. Using montages, Hirani creates a portrait of illegal immigration that is engaging. Montages are tricky techniques to use in Bollywood film. As Aditya Chopra’s “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” suggested, montages elevate Bollywood romantic films. Nevertheless, it works immensely in this film. Using stunning visuals, Hirani captures the tensions illegal immigrants embarking upon journeys are facing.
Another admirable aspect of “Dunki” which merits appreciation is the production. From a technical perspective, it’s one of the best Bollywood comedies which you will ever see. Hirani has always had a talent for creating musical sequences in movies, and “Dunki” showcased his best strengths as a director. Hirani expertly uses cross-cutting to stage musical sequences about illegal immigrants that are engaging. For instance, the cross-cutting enhances the Lutt Putt Gaya song. During this memorable song, Hardy shows his love for Manu by singing a song. Using cross-cutting, Hirani constructs a portrait of immigration that’s engaging. Furthermore, the musical score is magnificent. It gives the movie an engaging atmosphere capturing a heavy burden immigrants bear. Using strong production, Hirani captures the harsh reality of illegal immigration.
Storytelling is one of the main reasons why “Dunki” is a Bollywood drama about illegal immigrants that’s engaging. The film is very well-written, and effectively uses dramatic monologues to capture the tension leaders embarking upon journeys of immigration are facing. Throughout the movie, Hardy gives emotional monologues which showcase his strong devotion to resolving the problems of immigration. For instance, the monologues elevate the speech scene. During this tense scene, Hardy delivers a speech expressing his view on the issues of illegal immigration. Through strong monologues, Hirani crafts a portrait of immigration that audiences can relate to. Monologues are tricky techniques to use in Bollywood films. As Karan Johar’s “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” proved clearly, monologues elevate Bollywood films about broken families. Nevertheless, it works well in this movie. Using a fantastic screenplay, Hirani captures illegal immigrants that face a price to pay.
One appreciates amazing performances.
Shah Rukh Khan delivers one of his greatest performances as Hardy. Khan first achieved appreciation for playing romantic heroes in celebrated Bollywood movies. With “Dunki”, however, he took on his most comedic role. It isn’t easy to portray a soldier embarking upon an illegal immigration journey but he succeeds. This is the actor unlike you have ever seen him before: charismatic, intense and hilarious in his most profound role. With riveting expressions, he conveys the angst, courage and leadership of a soldier that is embarking on immigration expeditions. It’s a phenomenal performance from one of the finest actors in India.
While the movie is mainly a bold showcase for SRK, the supporting cast is also brilliant and worthy of recognition. Taapsee Panum is terrific, bringing wisdom to a woman that embarks on a journey to overcome an unjust immigration system. Boman Irani is superb, capturing the fierce personality of an Indian man that embarks on immigration journeys. Lastly, Vicky Kaushal merits appreciations. As a dedicated labourer, he brings hilarious comical relief to the film.
Despite its strong performances, however, “Dunki” can’t quite capture the process of illegal immigration realistically. If there’s a minor shortcoming to the movie, it lacks a strong ending. It’s an over-the-top ending that fails to bring the movie towards a truly satisfying resolution. Whereas this ending enhances Ashutosh Gowariker’s “Swades”, it clashes with tone of this film. Therefore, “Dunki” is one of those Bollywood movies not everyone will adore.
Nevertheless, fans of SRK would absolutely enjoy “Dunki” and so would audiences that seek meaningful entertainment. A brilliant Bollywood comedy, it honours an Indian star that has built a lasting legacy.
Nearly three years following the release of an iconic Bollywood film about individuals which embark upon an expedition of illegal immigration, its an incredible reminder of a beloved Indian actor that has built a strong reputation by his ability to portray powerful characters in memorable movies deserving worldwide appreciation.
