Aliens that explore extra-terrestrial galaxies are often depicted in movies. Following the introduction of E.T. in 1982, aliens have often been depicted in memorable movies which audiences value. On a personal level, I find films about extra-terrestrial aliens relatable. Many years ago, I formed strong bonds with a grandpa that was obsessed with the sightings of a UFO. Fascinated with artificial intelligence, he loved to watch movies about hardships aliens experience. Fond of science-fiction, he pondered possibilities of the world facing arrival of aliens in an invasion. He would always have a huge smile on his face when he got to see movies about aliens invading a quiet place. While most people in my family considered his theories regarding aliens to be ridiculous, I bonded with a grandpa I found precious. I looked forward every single day to watching movies with a grandfather that influenced my life in a way words can’t convey. Despite our age difference, I bonded with a relative giving me valuable guidance. Through his passion for the sci-fi genre, my grandpa inspired me to follow my dreams of Cinema. However, death became a barrier bringing his love of aliens to a painful closure. After my grandmother passed away, he suddenly lost interest in aliens’ secrets he disclosed every day. Facing a war of the worlds against depression, he lost interest in sci-fi movies about alien invasions. Unable to leave the heartbreaking memories of his wife behind, my grandfather lost his interest in close encounters of the third kind. Affected by tragedy, he lost interest in embarking on a space odyssey. As our trips to the theatre over time became far less frequent, our bond became distant. Looking back in nostalgia, I treasure a grandpa that inspired my love of Cinema. Years later, I treasure aliens that have become a sad reminder of my beloved grandfather.
As someone treasuring memories of a grandfather that loved disclosing aliens every day, I admired “Disclosure Day”. Released in 2026, Steven Spielberg’s latest movie captures alien invasions. Packed with stunning visuals, engaging storytelling and phenomenal performances, it’s a spectacular blockbuster. At the centre of it all is a brilliant performance from Emily Blunt, who embodies a meteorologist inspecting aliens. Although “Disclosure Day” is a riveting blockbuster, it isn’t a flawless film. It’s unevenly paced, lacking momentum of Spielberg’s best movies. Nevertheless, it offers engaging entertainment for fans of the sci-fi genre.
“Disclosure Day” tells the story of a meteorologist disclosing secrets about aliens on a fateful day. Emily Blunt portrays Margaret Fairchild, a meteorologist with imagination that’s wild. Margaret has a talent for broadcasting news. However, Margaret’s life forever changes when she discovers shocking government secrets about aliens in disclosure. Assisted by whistleblower Daniel (Josh O’Connor), Margaret seeks to disclose secrets of an alien disaster.
Steven Spielberg has always been fascinated with the stories of aliens. His iconic movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” offered a one-of-a-kind glimpse at extra-terrestrial aliens leaving a lasting legacy behind. With “Disclosure Day”, however, Spielberg has crafted his first alien conspiracy movie. It’s the filmmaker’s first attempt to capture alien conspiracies causing the world to face adversity but he succeeds immensely. Evoking “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial”, Spielberg effectively uses reaction shots to capture a world reacting to alien invasions that are impactful. For instance, reaction shots elevate the news broadcast scene. During this unforgettable scene, the camera zooms in on people’s faces reacting in awe to footage of aliens on news. It brought back fond memories of a grandfather expressing awe at the sight of aliens in sci-fi movies. Reaction shots are a complicated technique to use in movies. As Spielberg’s “Artificial Intelligence” suggested, reaction shots elevates movies about A.I. Nevertheless, it works immensely in this movie. Using groundbreaking visuals, Spielberg captures tensions alien invasions are causing.
Another admirable aspect of “Disclosure Day” that merits appreciation is action. Spielberg’s greatest strength as a director has always been his ability to use practical effects evoking wonder, and “Disclosure Day” showcases his strengths as a filmmaker. Evoking Ridley Scott’s “Alien”, Spielberg uses practical effects to stage engaging action sequences involving an alien. For instance, practical effects elevate the train scene. During this thrilling scene, Margaret forms strong bonds with Daniel surviving a train disaster together. It reminded me of my bond with a grandfather that appreciated alien invasion movies he celebrated. Moreover, the musical score is magnificent. John Williams’ music contributes to success of the movie. It gives the movie an engaging atmosphere capturing alien invasions evoking fear. Using stunning production, Spielberg captures an alien invasion.
Storytelling is one of the main reasons why “Disclosure Day” is an alien invasion movie that’s engaging. In Hollywood, most movies about aliens often portray them as cruel creatures without a trace of humanity. For instance, Roland Emmerich’s “Independence Day” depicted aliens in a negative way as cruel creatures that are destined to destroy Earth every day. Thankfully, however, “Disclosure Day” avoids these pitfalls. Evoking Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”, Spielberg uses silence to capture consequences individuals interacting with aliens experience. For instance, silence elevates the childhood scene. During this heartbreaking scene, Margaret recalls childhood memories losing her father at a young age. It reminded me of my feelings of grandfather’s grief after his wife had passed away leaving him devastated. Silence is a tricky technique. As John Krasinki’s “A Quiet Place” suggested, silence elevates horror movies about survival. Nevertheless, it works immensely. Through a strong screenplay, Spielberg captures alien invasions that come with a price to pay.
Emily Blunt delivers one of her best career performances as Margaret Fairchild. Blunt earned appreciation playing feminist heroines in British period pieces. With “Disclosure Day”, however, she took on her most complex role. It isn’t easy to portray a meteorologist that predicts alien invasion catastrophe but she succeeds immensely. Evoking Amy Adams in Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival”, Blunt embodies an intelligent female scientist forecasting alien arrival. With riveting expressions, she captures the angst, intelligence and strong spirit of a woman investigating alien invasions. It’s a phenomenal performance from one of the finest actresses working today.
While the movie is mainly a stunning showcase for Emily Blunt, the supporting cast is also excellent. Josh O’Connor is captivating, capturing the charismatic nature of a cybersecurity specialist that harbours secrets about alien disaster. Colin Firth is fantastic, bringing manic energy to an evil businessman protecting secrets about aliens that cause panic. Lastly, Colman Domingo merits appreciation. As an alien expert, he is unforgettable.
Despite its extraordinary performances, however, “Disclosure Day” can’t quite capture frightening extra-terrestrial aliens in an authentic way. Spielberg’s decision to integrate subplots about religion into the movie is commendable but hinders the pacing. Due to this faulty decision, scenes capturing Jane’s experience of religious faith aren’t as engaging as her involvement in alien invasions. As Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List” suggested, subplots about religion elevate historical Holocaust movies. Unlike the greatest Spielberg movies which are driven by a powerful sense of momentum, the film lacks an entertaining pace. Therefore, “Disclosure Day” can’t quite live up to the high standard of commemorated alien movies which audiences adore.
Nevertheless, fans of Steven Spielberg will definitely enjoy “Disclosure Day” and so will audiences seeking exhilarating popcorn entertainment. A breathtaking sci-fi blockbuster, it proves that stories of aliens are absolutely worth telling in movies audiences treasure.
A dazzling depiction of a dark day when devastating alien invasion secrets are revealed with a price to pay, it’s a riveting reminder that stories of extra-terrestrial life are absolutely worth telling in memorable movies today.
As powerful as Margaret’s desires to engage in alien disclosure, it has motivated me to recover years after I parted ways with an aging grandfather that never got over the heartbreaking loss of his wife by treasuring positive memories of a celebrated caregiver inspiring me to follow my dreams of becoming a film writer.
