‘A Captivating Classic’
Not many actors in Bollywood earned praise of Amitabh Bachchan. Following his rise to fame amid the 1970’s, Bachchan has transformed in a legendary Bollywood icon. Whether it’s inspiring teachers, frustrated fathers or patriotic leaders, Bachchan has played many strong characters. Arguably, Bachchan’s best strength as an actor has always been his strong commitment to his craft. He is one of those rare Indian actors that has always had strong presence which has elevated every movie he is in. Through his capabilities to create characters which audience can easily relate to, Bachchan has become a celebrated Bollywood icon that audiences value. Although he is best known for roles in Bollywood, Bachchan has proven he excels in every genre. Despite reaching an age of retirement, Bachchan has never lost long lasting passion for entertainment. Throughout his illustrious career, Bachchan has produced countless movies which are absolutely worth talking about without any doubt.
I’m a huge fan of Bachchan and adore all the films which he has made in his career. However, “Agneepath” definitely stands out as his most iconic movie. Released in 1990, Mukul S. Anand’s movie offered a powerful portrait of vengeful gangsters. Packed with breathtaking action, engrossing storytelling and astonishing acting, it’s an extraordinary Bollywood crime classic. At the centre of it all is an incredible performance by Amitabh Bachchan, who embodies a fierce gangster that faces tension. Although “Agneepath” is a captivating crime drama, it isn’t a flawless film. It suffers from a melodramatic ending without satisfying resolution. Nevertheless, it offers engaging entertainment for fans of Amitabh Bachchan.
“Agneepath” tells the story of a gangster on a dangerous path. Amitabh Bachchan plays Vijay Chauhan, a young man with devotions to his family. Vijay has often shared a strong bond with his father who he considers to be an admirable role model in every single way. However, Vijay’s life changes when he sees his father being lynched in a murder. Several years after the painful incident, Vijay returns to his family home seeking revenge. Seeking vengeance, Vijay is determined to avenge a death of his father causing disturbance. As all the odds are stacked against his favour, Vijay transforms into a gangster. Embarking on a dark path of violence, Vijay begins to question his experience.
Mukul Anand is fascinated with the lives of gangsters that are burdened. An excellent Bollywood filmmaker, Anand has commonly made great movies about Bollywood movies about gangsters engaging in murder. With “Agneepath”, however, Anand made his first ever revenge film. It was the director’s first attempt to capture the hardships faced by gangsters but he succeeded. Using strong cinematography, Anand captures the life of a mobster that seeks to avenge his family. Inspired with Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather”, Anand expertly uses montages to convey tensions faced by gangsters that participate in murder. For instance, montage elevates the vengeance scene. During this unforgettable scene, Vijay seeks vengeance for his father’s murders against a group of gangsters. Using stunning montage, Anand creates a portrait of gangs that’s engaging.
Montages are tricky techniques. As Karan Johar’s “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” did suggest, montages enhance movies about broken families. Nevertheless, it works well in this movie. Using stunning visuals, Anand captures tensions that vengeful gangsters are facing.
Another strong aspect of “Agneepath” that merits appreciation is the production. From a technical perspective, it’s one of the best Bollywood movies you will ever see. Evoking Mani Ratnam’s “Nayakan”, Anand expertly uses cross-cutting to craft music numbers capturing gangsters that are engaging. For instance, the cross-cutting enhances the Ali Baba Ali Baba song. During this memorable scene, Vijay engages in the luxurious life of a wealthy gangster. Using cross-cutting, the filmmaker creates musical sequences that are engaging. Moreover, the musical score is magnificent. It gives the movie an intense atmosphere by capturing the heavy burdens gangsters bear. Using stunning production, Anand captures the lives of gangsters that face tension.
Storytelling is one of the main reasons why “Agneepath” is a Bollywood crime film that’s engaging. The film is beautifully written, and effectively uses flashbacks to capture tense hardships faced by gangsters. Inspired with Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas”, Anand uses flashbacks to capture the lives of gangsters that experience dilemmas. For instance, the flashbacks elevate the father murder scene. During this haunting scene, Vijay recalls the traumatic memories of witnessing his father being lynched in front of his eyes as a child. Through flashbacks, Anand crafts a portrait of mobsters audiences relate to. Flashbacks are complex techniques. As Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” suggested, flashbacks enhance adaptations of great books. That being said, it works immensely in this movie. Through a bold screenplay, Anand captures gangsters that experience a painful price to pay.
One appreciates amazing performances.
Amitabh Bachchan delivers one of his best career performances as Vijay. Bachchan earned appreciation for playing romantic heroes in classic Bollywood movies. With “Agneepath”, however, he took on his most intense role. It isn’t easy to play a menacing gangster that seeks vengeance for family, but he succeeds tremendously. This is the actor unlike you have ever seen him before: intense, charming and emotional in his most iconic role. With captivating expressions, he captures the angst, bravery and vengeance of a gangster. It’s a fantastic performance by one of the most commemorated actors in Bollywood today.
While the movie is mainly a showcase for Bachchan, the supporting cast is equally excellent and worthy of admiration. Mithun Chakraborty is magnificent, capturing the fierce personality of a mob boss seeking control over his country. Neelam Kothari is captivating, capturing wisdom of a woman that falls in love with a gangster causing a problem. Lastly, Alok Nath is unforgettable. As Vijay’s deceased father, he brings real emotion to the movie.
Despite its superb performances, however, “Agneepath” can’t quite capture tensions of gangsters on a doomed path. If there’s a minor shortcoming to the movie, it lacks an engaging ending. It’s a melodramatic end that fails to bring the movie to a satisfying resolution. Whereas this over the top ending enhanced Brian De Palma’s “Scarface”, it clashes with this movie’s tone. Therefore, “Agneepath” can’t quite capture the lives of gangsters people adore.
Nevertheless, fans of Amitabh Bachchan will enjoy “Agneepath” and so will movie-goers seeking exhilarating entertainment. An engaging Bollywood crime drama, it honours an actor that’s beloved in India.
Nearly 30 years following the release of a groundbreaking Bollywood film about the life of a gangster seeking vengeance for the death of his father, it’s a riveting reminder of a legendary Indian actor that has created a strong legacy through his abilities to portray compelling chapters in memorable movies that audiences treasure.
