‘A Captivating Classic’

Few actresses in Bollywood are as beloved as Rani Mukerji. Ever since rise to stardom in the 1990’s, Mukerji has transformed into one of the finest actresses in the Indian film industry. Whether it’s star-crossed lovers, prostitutes or bold housekeepers, Mukerji has suggested she can portray various characters. Through her ability to portray characters that are compelling, she has created a legacy which has proven lasting. Mukerji’s greatest strength as an actress has always been her versatility. Mukerji’s strength as an actress is her courage to take risks. She is one of those actresses which has never been afraid of taking risks in her career by playing characters which aren’t commonly likeable. Despite reaching age of retirement, Mukerji has never lost her passion for making powerful entertainment. Throughout an enduring career, Mukerji has crafted many memorable movies which are definitely without a doubt absolutely worth watching.

I’m a huge fan of Mukerji and adore all films which she has made in her career. However, “Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic” stands out as her most compassionate movie. Released in 2008, Kunal Kohli’s movie offered a magical Bollywood remake of Mary Poppins. Packed with breathtaking visuals, strong storytelling and engrossing acting, it’s an extraordinary Bollywood fantasy drama. At the centre of it all is a terrific performance by Rani Mukerji, who personifies a magical nanny. Although “Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic” is an engaging fantasy drama, it isn’t a flawless movie. It builds to a predictable conclusion without a satisfying resolution. Nevertheless, it offers engaging entertainment that would satisfy fans of Rani Mukerji.

“Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic” tells the story of a nanny that strives to care for a tragic family through magic. Saif Ali Khan plays Ranbeer Talwar, a succesfull businessman that struggles to care for his family. After the tragic death of his wife, Ranbeer has grown to be distant from his children in life. However, Ranbeer’s life forever changes when he hires a new housekeeper. Geeta (Rani Mukerji) is a magical nanny that has talent for taking care of families. As Geeta forms a strong bond with the children, she saves a family on a brink of destruction. A magical nanny that’s practically perfect in every way, Geeta is determined to rescue a family gone astray.

Kunal Kohli is fascinated with the themes of family. A brilliant Bollywood filmmaker, Kohli has often made engaging movies about the lives of families facing a disaster. His iconic film “Fanaa” offered a powerful portrait of a blind woman whose family is torn apart with terrorism trauma. With “Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic”, however, Kohli made his first family-friendly film. It was the filmmaker’s attempt to capture the lives of families impacted by a nanny but he succeeded. Using engaging cinematography, Kohli captures a nanny on journeys to care for a family. Evoking Robert Stevenson’s “Mary Poppins”; Kohli expertly uses montages to capture a magical nanny that seeks to care for a family. For instance, montages enhance the nanny caring scene. During this heartfelt scene, Geeta seeks to care for her family through performing her household chores. Using strong montages, Kohli creates a portrait of nannies that is engaging. Montages are tricky techniques. As Yash Chopra’s “Veer-Zaara” suggested, montages elevate Bollywood movies about doomed love. Nevertheless, it works well in this movie. Through stunning visuals, Kohli captures the tensions that magical Nannie’s are facing.

Another admirable aspect of “Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic” that merits appreciation is production. From a technical perspective, it’s one of the best Bollywood movies you would ever see. Kohli effectively uses cross-cutting to stage musical sequences about nannies which are engaging. For instance, cross-cutting elevates the Nihaal Ho Gayi song. During this catchy song, Ranbeer is overjoyed when he takes his children on a trip to the zoo with Geeta. Through cross-cutting, Kohli creates musical sequences which are engaging. Moreover, the musical score is magnificent, it gives the movie a warm atmosphere capturing the painful burdens nannies bear. Through stunning production, Kohli captures housekeepers with dedication.

Storytelling is one of the main reasons why “Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic” is a Bollywood film that’s compelling. The film is beautifully written, and expertly uses silence to convey hardships that magical nannies experience. Evoking Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca”, Kohli uses silence to convey nannies experiencing a dilemma. For instance, silence enhances the farewell scene. During this unforgettable scene, Geeta bids emotional farewell toward children after her employment comes to an end. Through silence, Kohli crafts a portrait of magical nannies that audiences relate to. Silence is a tricky technique to use in films. As Karan Johar’s “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” suggested, silence elevates Bollywood films about destructive marriages. Nevertheless, it works well. Through a brilliant screenplay, Kohli captures nannies which are practically perfect in every way.

One appreciates amazing performances.

Rani Mukerji delivers one of her best career performances as Geeta. Mukerji achieved appreciation for playing romantic heroines in classic Bollywood movies. With “Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic”, however, she took on her most magical role. It isn’t easy to play a magical nanny that faces adversity but she succeeds. This is the actress unlike you’ve ever seen her before: intense, charismatic and emotional in her most memorable role. With riveting expressions, she captures the ambition, compassion and strong spirit of a magical nanny seeking to care for families facing tensions. It’s a powerful performance from one of the most celebrated actresses in Bollywood today.

While the movie is mainly a showcase for Rani Mukerji, the supporting cast is superb and worthy of appreciation. Saif Ali Khan is spectacular, capturing the reckless nature of a father that struggles to take care of a broken family which faces disaster. Shriya Sharma is superb, bringing charisma to a young girl that struggles to find happiness following parents’ death causing trauma. Lastly, Rishi Kapoor merits appreciations. As a religious figure, he is unforgettable.

Although “Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic” is a captivating Bollywood drama, it isn’t a truly flawless film. If there’s a shortcoming to the film, it lacks an engaging ending. It’s an over the top conclusion that fails to bring the film toward a satisfying resolution. Whereas this predicable ending enhanced Rob Marshall’s “Mary Poppins Returns”, it clashes with this film. Therefore, “Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic” can’t quite capture the lives of nannies that audiences adore.

Nevertheless, fans of Rani Mukerji will truly enjoy “Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic” and so will audiences seeking bold entertainment. A captivating Bollywood fantasy drama, it honours an actress with charisma in India.

Nearly 20 years following the release of a captivating fantasy film about a magical nanny seeking to care for a broken family, it’s a breathtaking reminder of a legendary Bollywood actress that has built a lasting legacy through abilities to portray larger-than-life characters in memorable movies audiences love dearly.
