The Dark Knight Rises” (2012) – Movie Review

‘A spectacular conclusion to an amazing trilogy’

“The Dark Knight Rises” is written and directed by Christopher Nolan. Its screenplay is also written by Jonathan Nolan. This film stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Its plot is set eight years after the events of “The Dark Knight”. A new terrorist leader named Bane (Tom Hardy) overwhelms Gotham City’s people. This causes the Dark Knight (Christian Bale) to return to a city that has branded him an enemy. “The Dark Knight Rises” is the third and final installment of Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” films.

Christopher Nolan is one of the best directors working today. He uses great actors and brilliant screenplays as assets to tell stories. With this film, Nolan ends an amazing trilogy in a spectacular fashion. Boasting magnificent direction, excellent performances, a great script, and a grand score, this is without doubt one of the best movies of the year. Nolan directs it with a vast amount of knowledge of Cinema. He proves that action sequences are not as important as scripts. The action set pieces for this film are staged beautifully. There aren’t many, but the ones that are present are very impressive. Jonathan Nolan’s screenplay is highly intelligent; packing an immense emotional punch. It enhances this movie to a higher standard. Wally Pfister’s cinematography is gorgeous, capturing the bleak and dark tone of this film. Hans Zimmer’s score is phenomenal, a rich and satisfying improvement on an already brilliant “The Dark Knight” score.

Christian Bale delivers one of his best performances as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Emotionally driven by events of the previous film, Bale is terrific; grasping the tragic turmoil of his character perfectly. Anne Hathaway is engaging and quirky as Selina Kyle. Hathaway provides a great amount of charm and humor to the film with an enthusiastic performance. Joseph Gordon-Levitt proves that he’s a rising star as John Blake. Even if he’s inaudible at times, Tom Hardy is still compelling as Bane. Hardy is both physically and mentally distinct. The expressions that he pulls of with his eyes are flawless. The rest of the cast is top-notch.

Despite representing a massive scale of entertainment, this film isn’t perfect. It has a few minor problems that could have easily been mended. The script, which enhances this movie, also brings it down. It just doesn’t explain some events in a clear manner. Also, too many subplots can cause plot holes if they aren’t explained thoroughly. That’s exactly what happens here. In a nutshell, “The Dark Knight Rises” isn’t as great as “The Dark Knight”, but its still one of the best movies of the year. Recommended for all fans of the previous films in this trilogy.

  1. I agree Nolan tries to do too much here. That is my major criticism of a lot of his movies. I always preferred the second of Nolan’s trilogy with Heath ledger as the Joker. I can’t see anyone else playing that role with the same mastery, even the great Joaquin Phoenix.

    1. Thanks once again for the comment! I actually have to disagree with you on this one. I had a chance to rewatch “The Dark Knight Rises” and over time have come to appreciate it more. It may not be quite as good as the previous two films. But it’s still an incredibly satisfying conclusion to the franchise. And it also has one of the finest endings in the history of Cinema.

But yes, nobody could top Heath Ledger. The second movie is also my favorite film. It’s the best comic-book film ever made in my view and simply can’t be surpassed.
