‘A Spectacular Blockbuster’

When it comes to the greatest science-fiction books ever written about the galaxy, it’s worth discussing “Project Hail Mary”. A spectacular book about science-fiction, it earned appreciation for depiction of a martian. On a personal level, I find themes of survival in the novel relatable. I remember forming powerful bonds with a housekeeper that loved seeing interstellar galaxies in danger. Fond of E.T., he would love to witness extra-terrestrial aliens embarking on journeys in the galaxy. A sci-fi fan in every way, he would enjoy watching astronauts that were cast away. Fascinated with Apollo 13, he loved watching space missions on the big-screen. We would always enjoy watching movies about guardians defending galaxies. Unlike most servants that lacked an education, he had immense knowledge about the first man to land on the moon in a historic mission. Like Ryland Grace, he was determined to chase his dreams of becoming a famous astronaut in space. He thought that nothing could stop him from becoming an astronaut. However, illness brought his dreams to tragic closure. When he was diagnosed with Liver Cancer, he abandoned his dreams forever. His dream to explore galaxies far far away was ruined on the day he passed away. A terrible tragedy, the death of a housekeeper that loved to see astronauts defy gravity in the galaxy deeply affected my family. Facing tears in the rain, my family struggled to cope with the loss of a housekeeper causing pain. In denial, I struggled to face the painful loss of a housekeeper that believed in alien arrival. Ultimately, I felt a sense of pity for a poor housekeeper that never got to turn his space odyssey dreams into reality. Years later, I treasure bold sci-fi literature that’s become a sad reminder of my housekeeper.

As someone treasuring a housekeeper that loved exploring the galaxy, I adored “Project Hail Mary”. Released in 2026, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s movie honoured a science-fiction book. Packed with breathtaking visuals, engaging storytelling and phenomenal acting, it’s a spectacular blockbuster. At the centre of it all is Ryan Gosling, who captures tensions a scientist is facing. Although “Project Hail Mary” is riveting, it isn’t flawless. It suffers from uneven pacing. Nevertheless, it offers engaging entertainment for fans of the sci-fi genre.

“Project Hail Mary” follows a scientist embarking on a project to survive in the galaxy. Ryan Gosling embodies Dr. Ryland Grace, an intelligent scientist with a love for exploring space. Grace has always taken a keen interest in space science shaping his life experience. However, Grace’s life forever changes when he’s tasked with a dangerous mission causing disaster. On a project to survive in space, Grace has nerve-wracking obstacles to face. As all the odds are stacked against his favour, Grace questions whether he can complete his space adventure.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are newcomers towards themes of space exploration. Before they made “Project Hail Mary”, the directing duo had never created a science-fiction movie before. It’s the filmmakers’ attempt adapting a legendary science-fiction book on the big-screen butt they succeed tremendously. Evoking Ridley Scott’s “The Martian”, the directors effectively use point-of-view shots to capture a space mission. For instance, POV shots elevate the space communication scene. During this unforgettable scene, Ryland shares his love for science with a rock that becomes his companion. It brought back fond memories of a housekeeper that loved watching aliens in galaxies. Montages are tricky techniques to use in movies. As Ron Howard’s “Apollo 13” suggested, POV shots elevate sci-fi movies about moon landings. Damien Chazelle’s “First Man” proved that POV shots elevate biopics. Nevertheless, it works immensely in this movie. Using breathtaking visuals, Lord & Miller capture a scientist on a space mission that’s frightening.

Another admirable aspect of “Project Hail Mary” that merits appreciation is the production. Evoking Steven Spielberg’s “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial”, Lord & Miller effectively use practical effect puppets to create a creature that’s extra-terrestrial. For instance, practical effects elevate the rocky introduction scene. During this heartfelt scene, Ryland meets Rocky for the first time forming bonds with the alien creature with whom he shares love for space. It reminded me of my strong relationship with a housekeeper that appreciated science-fiction stories which made him excited. Moreover, the musical score is magnificent. Daniel Pemberton’s music contributes to the success of the movie. It gives the movie an intense atmosphere capturing the burden that scientists on space missions bear. Through bold production, Lord & Miller capture a strong space mission.

Storytelling is one of the main reasons why “Project Hail Mary” is a science-fiction film that’s engaging. In Hollywood, most movies about space rarely ever address hardships of astronauts that are misunderstood. For instance, Alfonso Cauron’s “Gravity” depicted astronauts overcoming gravity of the galaxy without adversity. Thankfully, however, “Project Hail Mary” avoids these pitfalls. Evoking Robert Zemeckis’ “Cast Away”, Lord & Miller use symbolism to capture grief faced by astronauts that are cast away. Throughout the movie, the rock is a symbol showcasing grief faced by astronauts in the galaxy. For instance, symbolism elevates the death scene. During this unforgettable scene, Ryland grieves the loss of his rock companion that dies in an accident. It reminded me of my grief when a housekeeper that appreciated science-fiction passed away leaving my family devastated. Symbolism is a tricky technique to use in movies. As Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” suggested, symbolism elevates classic sci-fi movies. James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” suggested that symbolism elevates comic-book movies. Nevertheless, it works in this movie. Through a spectacular screenplay, Lord & Miller honour a book that’s beloved today.

One appreciates astonishing performances.

Ryan Gosling delivers one of his best career performances as Ryland Grace. Gosling achieved appreciation playing heroes in romantic dramas. With “Project Hail Mary”, however, he took on his most complex role. It isn’t easy portraying a scientist seeking to save humanity. It’s a challenging role requiring the actor to perform alongside a puppet, but he succeeds. Evoking Matthew McConaughey in Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar”, Gosling portrays a scientist on a space adventure. With riveting expressions, he conveys the angst, bravery and grief of an astronaut on space missions. It’s a powerful performance from a phenomenal Canadian actor.

While the film is mainly a stunning showcase for Gosling, the supporting cast is also excellent and worthy of appreciation. Sandra Huller is spectacular, capturing the authoritative nature of a strict government leader seeking to prevent global disaster. James Oritz is outstanding, bringing humanity to a rock creature that is determined to survive space catastrophe. Lastly, Ken Leung merits appreciation. As a scientist, he is unforgettable.

Despite its extraordinary performances, however, “Project Hail Mary” can’t quite honour legendary science-fiction books about the galaxy. If there’s a minor shortcoming to the movie, it lacks engaging pacing. Lord & Miller’s decision integrating flashbacks about life on Earth is bold but hinders the pacing. Due to this faulty technique, flashbacks capturing Ryland’s life on Earth aren’t as engaging as his space mission. As Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” suggested, flashbacks elevate dystopian sci-fi movies. Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” proved that flashbacks elevate alien invasion films. Therefore, “Project Hail Mary” can’t quite honour a sci-fi book readers adore.

Nevertheless, fans of Ryan Gosling will definitely enjoy “Project Hail Mary” and so would movie-goers seeking exhilarating entertainment. A spectacular blockbuster, it honours a legendary science-fiction book about astronauts in danger.

A spectacular adaptation of a science-fiction book about astronauts on a dangerous space mission, it’s a soaring reminder that stories of astronauts are absolutely worth telling in memorable movies which deserve appreciation.

As strong as Ryland’s desire to survive in space, it has incited me to move on years after the devastating death of a housekeeper that suffered from a life-threatening case of terminal illness left tears streaming down my face cherishing a companion giving me lifelong love for science-fiction that I will forever embrace.
