Whether it’s cruel police-officers, real-life boxers or concerned fathers, Wahlberg has portrayed many strong characters. Arguably, Wahlberg’s strength as an actor is his strong commitment. He’s one of those rare actors that has always poured both his heart and soul into each role. Wahlberg has never been afraid of taking on risky roles in his career by playing characters which are always provocative. An actor that isn’t afraid of taking risks, Wahlberg has become a star that people treasure. Shining bright light in darkness, Wahlberg has become one of the greatest actors in the entertainment business. Throughout his long-lasting career, Wahlberg has starred in countless unforgettable movies which are definitely without any single doubts worth watching.

I’m a huge fan of Wahlberg and adore all the films that he has starred in during his career. However, “Boogie Nights” is my favourite. Released in 1997, Paul Thomas Anderson’s movie provided a captivating portrait of the American pornographic industry. Packed with breathtaking production-design, engrossing storytelling and phenomenal acting, it’s one of the greatest films ever made about the adult industry. At the centre of it all is an excellent performance by Mark Wahlberg, who plays a pornographic actor which seeks success in a competitive industry. Ultimately, what makes “Boogie Nights” a masterpiece is its universal appeal. Unlike most films about the adult film industry, it tackles strong themes which would resonate with everyone. It delivers a profound message about importance of achieving one’s dreams which would resonate with everyone. A captivating masterpiece about a controversial industry, there are many reasons why “Boogie Nights” is a movie which is definitely without a doubt worth seeing.

Set in 1977 Los Angeles, “Boogie Nights” tells a story of a pornographic actor which seeks success in the adult industry. Mark Wahlberg portrays Eddie Adams, a young man with big dreams of becoming a successful actor. Eddie has always had an aptitude for making adult films with nudity. When he’s recruited by the famous adult film producer Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds), Eddie is given a chance to become a great pornographic actor. However, Eddie’s dreams are threatened when he discovers the painful realities of being a pornographic actor. Faced with a dilemma, Eddie wonders whether it’s truly possible to become a successful actor in a controversial industry that causes trauma. As all the odds are stacked against his favour, Eddie questions if it’s truly possible to become a successful actor. Discovering that becoming an adult actor comes with a price to pay, Eddie wonders if it’s possible to succeed in a painful profession in L.A.

Paul Thomas Anderson is a newcomer towards stories of adult actors. Before he has directed “Boogie Nights”, Anderson had never made a film about the adult film industry in his career. It was the filmmaker’s first attempt to capture the lives of pornographic actors in a sensitive industry, but he succeeded. Using captivating cinematography, Anderson captures an actor seeking success in the pornographic industry. Visually, the film is a stunning feast for eyes as breathtaking as pornographic films which Dirk Diggler seeks to organize. Anderson effectively uses long takes to capture the chaotic journey of a pornographic actor seeking success in the industry. For instance, long takes enhance the party scene. During this unforgettable scene, Dirk attends a lavish party taking place at a home of a legendary pornographic filmmaker. One appreciates long takes capturing intense hardships that adult film actors are enduring. Long takes are often tricky techniques to use in movies. As Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” suggested clearly, long takes enhance classic crime films. Nevertheless, it works really well in this movie. Through breathtaking visuals, Paul Thomas Anderson captures the hardships that bold pornographic actors seeking success are facing.

Another admirable aspect of “Boogie Nights” that deserves appreciation is the production-design. From a technical perspective, the film is well made. Anderson has always had an aptitude for recreating previous eras in the past in his movies, and “Boogie Nights” showcased his strength as a filmmaker. Unlike most movies about the adult film industry that are often hard for most viewers to watch, “Boogie Nights” is an exception. Anderson does an extraordinary job of staging realistic pornographic scenes by gorgeous production-design. For instance, the production-design enhances the first shooting scene. During this unforgettable scene, Eddie participates in a first shoot for a pornographic industry. One admires production capturing the mechanics of a misunderstood profession. It isn’t simple to shoot scenes for a fake pornographic movie, but Anderson pulls it off successfully. Moreover, the musical score is magnificent. Michael Penn’s music is integral to the success of the movie. Penn’s score that consists of songs from the 1970’s captures the mood of the era. Through powerful production design, Anderson captures pornographic stars whose lives decline.

Storytelling is one of the primary reasons why “Boogie Nights” is a film which is compelling. The film is beautifully written, and effectively uses symbolism to capture the tensions that pornographic actors are facing. Anderson’s screenwriting strength is abilities to capture tensions pornographic actors endure through symbolism. Throughout the movie, Anderson successfully uses symbolism of the name to showcase Dirk Diggler’s attachment towards the pornographic film industry. For instance, strong symbolism of the name enhances the awards acceptance scene. During this scene, Dirk accepts an award for his work in the porn industry. Through strong symbolism, Anderson creates a compelling character audiences can easily relate to. Symbolism is often a complex technique that isn’t easy to use in movies. As Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed” suggested, symbolism elevates crime films about cops. Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones” demonstrated that symbolism elevates adaptations about child abductions. Nevertheless, it excels in this movie. Through an extraordinary screenplay, Anderson captures pornographic actors that face a price to pay.

One appreciates amazing performances.
