Not many actresses in Hollywood have built a legacy as strong as Meryl Streep. Ever since her rise to recognition in the 1980’s, Streep has become a beloved icon. Whether it’s political leaders, doomed lovers or Holocaust survivors, Streep has portrayed many strong characters. Arguably, Streep’s best strength as an actress has always been her strong commitment to her craft. She is one of those rare actresses which has always had aptitudes for stealing show in supporting roles with limited screen time. Even when she isn’t the main focus of a film, Streep has left a lasting impression. Through ability to play characters which are compelling, Streep has established a commemorated legacy that’s lasting. Despite reaching an age of retirement, Streep has never lost her passions for entertainment. Throughout her long-lasting career, Streep has made countless memorable movies tackling strong themes which are worth talking about.

I’m a huge fan of Streep and adore all the films she has created in her career. However, “The Bridges of Madison County” is absolutely my favourite. Released in 1995, Clint Eastwood’s movie offered a beautiful adaptation of a book about romance. Packed with bold production, engaging storytelling and phenomenal acting, it’s one of the finest literary adaptations ever made. At the centre of it all is an extraordinary performance by Meryl Streep, who embodies a woman in love with a photographer. Ultimately, what makes “The Bridges of Madison County” a masterpiece is universal appeal. Unlike most romantic movies, it tackles strong themes that everyone will relate to. A riveting masterpiece about doomed love, there are countless strong reasons why “The Bridges of Madison County” is worth watching.

“The Bridges of Madison County” tells a story of a housewife that falls in love with a famous photographer facing adversities. Meryl Streep plays Francesca Johnson, a lonely housewife that lives on a secluded farm. Francesca has often lived a lonely life as widow after the sad death of her husband. However, Francesca’s life forever changes when she falls in love with a photographer in a relationship that causes disaster. Robert Kincaid (Clint Eastwood) is an ambitious photographer that has always had big dreams of romance. As Francesca forms a strong bond with Robert, she is forced to face a serious dilemma. As all the odds are clearly stacked against her favour, Francesca begins to wonder whether it’s truly possible for her to achieve a bright future.

Clint Eastwood has often been fascinated with themes of loneliness. A legendary filmmaker, Eastwood has often made engaging movies about lonely characters that face disasters. His western “Unforgiven” captured unforgiven outlaws facing adversity. With “The Bridges of Madison County”, however, Eastwood created his first romantic drama. It was the director’s first attempt to adapt a legendary book about romance but he succeeded. Using captivating cinematography, Eastwood captures a lonely housewife embarking on a journey to discover romance in the 1960’s. Eastwood successfully uses montages to convey a woman embarking on a journey to find romance. For instance, the montages enhance the meeting scene. During this memorable scene, Francesca meets for a first time with Robert launching their romantic affair. Through stunning montages, Eastwood honours a beloved book about romance that’s engaging. Montages are tricky techniques to use in movies. As David Frankel’s “The Devil Wears Prada” suggested, montages enhance fashion movies. Nevertheless, it works well in this movie. Using stunning visuals, Eastwood captures tensions which women falling in love are facing.

Another admirable aspect of “The Bridges of Madison County” that merits appreciation is production. From a technical perspective, the film is extremely well made. Eastwood deftly uses real-life farm locations to demonstrate the romance among a couple facing adversity. For instance, American farm locations elevate the clothes wash scene. During this heartfelt scene, Francesca seeks to tend towards her clothes on a secluded farm. Through real-life farm locations, Eastwood honours a book of romance that’s compelling. Furthermore, the musical score is magnificent. Lennie Niehaus’ commemorated music is key to the success of the film. It gives the movie a tense atmosphere capturing the heavy burden that doomed lovers bear. Using breathtaking production, Eastwood honours a celebrated book about lovers that experience tension.

Storytelling is one of the reasons “The Bridges of Madison County” is a romantic movie that’s compelling. The film is beautifully written, and expertly uses silence to capture bonds among lovers enduring tension. Throughout the movie, Eastwood effectively utilizes silence to capture lovers facing tension. For instance, the silence enhances the farewell scene. During this sad scene, Francesca bids emotional farewells to Robert after me makes the decision to leave. Through bold sequences of silence, Eastwood creates a romantic relationship that audiences could relate to. Silence is a tricky technique to use in movies. As Robert Benton’s “Kramer vs. Kramer” demonstrated, silence often elevates movies about broken marriages. Spike Jonze’s “Adaptation” suggested that silence enhances films about beloved screenwriters. That being said, it works immensely on this movie. Using a spectacular screenplay, Eastwood honours an iconic book about doomed lovers experiencing a price to pay.

One admires astonishing performances.
