Whether it’s bold soldiers, political leaders or space scavengers, Gleeson has played several larger than life characters. Arguably, Gleeson’s finest strength as an actor has always been his commitment to his craft. He is one of those actors that has always had a talent for stealing a show in supporting roles with limited screen time. Even when he isn’t a main focus of a movie, Gleeson has always left a strong impression. An actor with a powerful commitment to his craft, Gleeson has become an icon in entertainment. Through his abilities to portray characters which prove compelling, Gleeson has established a commemorated legacy that’s lasting. Throughout his enduring career, Gleeson has made several unforgettable movies which are definitely worth talking about without a single doubt.
I’m a huge fan of Gleeson and adore all movies which he has produced in his career. However, “Braveheart” is my favourite. Released in 1995, Mel Gibson’s movie offered a powerful portrait of medieval warriors. Packed with breathtaking production, engaging storytelling and powerful acting, it’s one of the best medieval films ever made. At the centre of it all is an extraordinary performance by Brendan Gleeson, who plays a medieval warrior enduring tension. Ultimately, what makes “Braveheart” a masterpiece is its universal appeal. Unlike most medieval films, it tackles bold themes that everyone can relate to. A mesmerizing medieval masterpiece, there are many strong resins why “Braveheart” is a movie worth seeing.
“Braveheart” tells the story of a brave warrior embarking on a journey to save his kingdom from being torn apart. Mel Gibson embodies William Wallace, a strong warrior with a drive to save his kingdom. Wallace has often done his best to protect his kingdom from situations of danger. However, William’s life dramatically changes when his new bride is murdered in a disaster. Seeking vengeance, Wallace strives to seek revenge against the English rulers for the crimes they have committed. Assisted by compassionate companion Hamish Campbell (Brendan Gleeson), Wallace seeks to save his kingdom from destruction. As all the odds are stacked against his favour, Wallace begins to wonder whether it’s possible to save a doomed kingdom from disaster.
Mel Gibson is a newcomer towards themes of warfare destruction. Before he had produced “Braveheart”, Gibson had never made a film about lives of medieval warriors before. It was the filmmaker’s first attempt to capture lives of medieval warriors enduring tragedies but he succeeds tremendously. Through captivating cinematography, Gibson captures a medieval warrior embarking on a journey to discover his identity. Evoking Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator”, the filmmaker effectively uses handheld camera to capture gladiators which face a dilemma. For instance, the handheld camera enhances the battlefield scene. During this heartfelt scene, William Wallace guides his warriors upon an intense journey into the battlefield. Through stunning handheld camera, Gibson creates a powerful portrait of medieval gladiators that’s compelling. Handheld camerawork is a tricky technique to employ in most movies. As Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York” suggested, handheld camera often enhances films about gangs. Nevertheless, it works well in this film. Through stunning visuals, Gibson captures the tension gladiators are facing.
Another admirable aspect of “Braveheart” that merits appreciation is the production. From a technical perspective, the movie is extremely well made. Gibson expertly uses costumes to demonstrate a medieval warrior embarking on a transformation. For instance, the costumes elevate the medieval battle scene. During this unforgettable scene, William leads warriors on a journey to face warfare destruction. Through cross-cutting editing, Gibson crafts a portrait of medieval warriors that is compelling. Cross-cutting is a tricky technique to use in movies. As Doug Liman’s “Edge of Tomorrow” claimed clearly, cross-cutting elevates science fiction movies. Nevertheless, it works immensely in this movie. Furthermore, the musical score is magnificent. James Hornet’s music is key to the success of the movie. It gives the movie a tense atmosphere capturing painful burden medieval warriors bear. Through phenomenal production, Gibson captures medieval warriors facing tension.
Storytelling is one of the several reasons why “Braveheart” is an epic film that’s engaging. The film is beautifully written, and effectively uses silence to capture lives of courageous warriors facing violence. Throughout the film, Gibson uses silence to capture the struggles endured by medieval warriors whose lives are affected by violence. For instance, the silence enhances the murder aftermath scene. During this memorable scene, Wallace discovers the harsh reality of being a medieval warrior after murders. Through strong sequences of silence, Gibson creates a portrait of medieval warriors that audiences can easily relate to. Silence is a complex technique to use in movies. As Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later” demonstrated, silence elevates zombie movies. Nevertheless, it works well in this movie. Through a bold screenplay, Gibson captures Scottish warriors that face a price to pay.
One admired powerful performances.
Brendan Gleeson gives one of his best career performances as Hamish. Gleeson first earned appreciation for portraying gangsters in crime dramas. With “Braveheart”, however, Gleeson took on his most complex role. It isn’t simple to portray a Scottish warrior that embarks upon a perilous journey, but he succeeded immensely. This is the actor unlike you’ve ever seen him in the past before: intense, charismatic and truly moving in his most iconic role. Gleeson always excels at playing emotional heroes which are under pressure, and “Braveheart” showcased his finest strengths as a commemorated actor. With riveting expressions, he captures the angst, grief and resentment of a commemorated medieval warrior that endures tensions. It’s a phenomenal performance from one of the most commemorated actors which is working today.
While the movie is mainly a stunning showcase for Gleeson, the supporting cast is also superb and worthy of recognition. Mel Gibson is great, capturing determination of a medieval warrior seeking to save his kingdom from destruction. Sophie Marceau is spectacular, capturing the anxieties of a woman that falls in love with a medieval warrior that faces adversity. Lastly, Angus Macfadyen merits appreciation. As a medieval king, he brings a sense of authority to the movie.
Finally, “Braveheart” would earn appreciation of everyone for capturing warriors that have a brave heart. Unlike most films about medieval warriors, it tackles strong themes everyone will relate to. It discusses strong themes including identity, mental health and trauma that would resonate with everyone. Viewers don’t need to be familiar with Scottish history to appreciate it. It delivers a meaningful message regarding trauma that would resonate among everyone. Therefore, “Braveheart” is one of those rare medieval movies that everyone will definitely adore.
Fans of Mel Gibson will absolutely appreciate “Braveheart” and so would movie-goers which seek enjoyable entertainment. A mesmerizing period piece, it celebrates an actor that’s awe-inspiring.
Nearly 30 years following the release of a groundbreaking film about brave medieval warriors with a large heart whose lives are torn apart, it’s a riveting reminder about a commemorated actor that has built a lasting legacy through his abilities to portray compelling characters in unforgettable movies considered to be art.
