‘Brilliant Bond Sequel’
The essence of “James Bond” films is the immense entertainment they offer on a massive scale. Character development and storytelling is vague, because the movies are formed around the same predictable formula. “Skyfall”, the latest entry in the Bond franchise, is high on entertainment but different. It doesn’t completely follow the formula of the other movies. Following Daniel Craig as 007 for the third consecutive time, in “Skyfall” the MI6 organization is under attack by a terrorist. James Bond must destroy the threat before the matter gets out of hand.
Films that have great pacing benefit tremendously in terms of entertainment value. “Skyfall” is one of those rare movies where everything is top-notch and perfect. It’s a masterpiece, and arguably one of the greatest Bond films ever made.
This film features excellent direction, a fantastic script, magnificent acting, and a great soundtrack. Sam Mendes elevates this movie to another level. His direction is splendid, because he handles storytelling and cinematography seamlessly.
Firstly, this movie is beautifully filmed. The cinematography by Roger Deakins is visually stunning, capturing action set-pieces and locations with style. One such scene where it shows is in this film’s opening sequence. Lavish, vibrant, and noticeable, this movie has breathtaking cinematography. From the appearance of gorgeous skyscrapers in China to the elaborate scenery of England, this movie is delicately framed.
Another reason why this film works is its screenplay. The script is filled with witty and comical dialogue. Each character is well developed and profound. Thomas Newman’s soundtrack is effective and appropriate for this movie.

Daniel Craig is brilliant as James Bond. Ever since his phenomenal appearance in “Casino Royale”, this actor has grasped the character’s intentions and demeanour with ease. There’s an intensity to his expressions and acting in this movie. He is at the top of his game in every moment. Judi Dench delivers a highly nuanced performance as M. She has become one of the most respected actresses in Hollywood and this movie displays her at her best. Javier Bardem is outstanding as Silva. He has electric screen presence and a fine grasp of the intentions of his character. Bardem’s performance as the main villain stands as one of the best of the year. The rest of the cast including Naomie Harris and Ralph Fiennes is terrific.
In a nutshell, this is a highly redeeming James Bond movie after the disappointing “Quantum of Solace”. It’s silly in parts and even over-the-top like every other Bond film, but it’s still highly entertaining. It’s also over two hours long, yet not one moment is dull or out of place.
For any fan of the franchise or genre, this film seems like a dream come true. A marvelous dream for sure.
