I’m a huge fan of Firth and adore all the films he has made in his career. However, “Bridget Jones’s Diary” is my favourite. Ever since its release in 2001, Sharon Maguire’s movie has become a beloved classic. Packed with bold production-design, engaging storytelling and phenomenal performances, it’s one of the best romantic movies ever made. At the centre of it all is a fantastic performance from Colin Firth, who depicts a lonely man that falls in love with an eccentric woman. Ultimately, what makes “Bridget Jones’s Diary” a masterpiece is its universal appeal. Unlike most movies in the romantic genre, it tackles strong themes that everyone would relate to. It delivers a strong message about importance of finding one’s identity which would resonate with everyone. A mesmerizing romantic masterpiece, there are several strong reasons why “Bridget Jones’s Diary” is worth seeing.

Sharon Maguire is a newcomer toward stories of women. Before she directed “Bridget Jones’ Diary”, Maguire has never made a film about single women before. A first-time filmmaker, Maguire had never made a movie about the lives of single women enduring tension. It was the filmmaker’s first attempt to capture grim tensions faced by women seeking lovers but she succeeds tremendously. Through strong cinematography, Maguire captures the lives of women seeking romantic lovers. Visually, the movie is a stunning feast for the eyes which is as gorgeous as partners about which Bridget Jones seeks to fantasize. Maguire effectively uses montages to capture a woman which is searching for lovers. For instance, montages elevate the preparation scene. During this unforgettable scene, Bridget is given advice by her friends on how to prepare for her date with her boss. One appreciates montages which capture painful hardships women go through. Montages are tricky techniques to use in films. As Ron Howard’s “Cinderella Man” claimed, montages enhance classic films about boxing. Rob Marshall’s “Chicago” claimed montages elevate Broadway musical adaptations. That being said, it works tremendously in this movie. Through captivating visuals, Maguire captures hardship experienced by commemorated women which seek to be admired.

Another admirable aspect of “Bridget Jones’s Diary” is the production. From a technical point of view, the film is well made. Maguire expertly uses costumes to capture the life of a woman that seeks romantic relationships. Throughout the movie, Bridget’s costumes play a powerful role in demonstrating her personality. Bridget’s dresses showcase her strong transformation into a heroine that’s compelling. For instance, costumes elevate the party scene. During this unforgettable scene, Bridget dresses up as a beauty Queen to a party to catch the attention of her boss. One appreciates costumes which capture the lives of women seeking romances that are compelling. Furthermore, the musical score is magnificent. Patrick Doyle’s music is essential towards the success of the movie. It gives the film a tender atmosphere capturing the heavy burden which lovers bear. Through powerful production-design, Maguire conveys the hardships that are experienced by lovers whose lives decline.

Storytelling is one of the main reasons why “Bridget Jones’s Diary” is a classic which is compelling. The movie is beautifully written, and effectively uses voice-over narration to capture the lives of single women that face tense romantic tension.
