‘Wonderful Entertainment’

Over the last few years, superhero movies haven’t fared too well. Although these movies have made money at the box-office, lately they have declined in quality. With loud action sequences and cool visual effects, these films have certainly appealed to comic-book fans. However, movie-goers looking for originality, novelty or an engaging story have been left disappointed. In this sense, superhero movies have failed to live up to the expectations of audiences.

This is especially true when it comes to films in the DC Cinematic Universe. For instance, “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad” were two disappointing films released last year. Although these movies were box-office hits, they were critically panned and failed to meet the expectations of movie-goers.

Thankfully, that is definitely not the case with “Wonder Woman”. Patty Jenkins’ female-led superhero film is a wonderful surprise, breathing fresh life into the stale superhero genre. Visually stunning, heartfelt and thrilling from start to finish, it is one of the most well-made superhero films in recent memory. Unlike other films in the genre, it works tremendously due to a fantastic script and top-notch performances from a stellar cast. It marks a step in the right direction for the DC Cinematic Universe, which has finally produced a film that lives up to the hype.

Unlike previous outings in the DC Universe, “Wonder Woman” offers an engaging and well-constructed origin story. Set during World War I, the film explores in great detail the origins of Wonder Woman and how she becomes a hero. Diana grows up on a mythical island where she trains to become a skilled warrior. When a pilot suddenly arrives on the island, Diana leaves her homeland and joins forces with mankind to fight in the war.

It’s a complex, character-driven origin story that is unlike any superhero movie I’ve ever seen. Although we’ve seen the origin story many times in films such as 2013’s “Man of Steel”, “Wonder Woman” is distinct in tone and style. It’s a refreshing change of pace from the norm, a light-hearted, fun and humorous take on the genre. Instead of following the footsteps of past superhero movies, director Patty Jenkins has crafted an original film with a unique style. “Wonder Woman” delivers everything that comic-book fans could have hoped for: thrilling action, humor and character development.

If there is anyone that knows how to stage an exciting action sequence, it is director Patty Jenkins. “Wonder Woman” features the most breathtaking, heart-pounding action sequences you’ll see in a movie this year. Yet isn’t this what we come to expect from any superhero movie? Admittedly, nearly every superhero movie has thrilling action. However, what sets “Wonder Woman” apart is that you care about the characters. The two lead characters, Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor are very well-developed and believable. The action sequences are thrilling because you become emotionally invested in these characters lives.

A talented cast of actors bring these iconic characters to life. Each actor in the cast is at the top of their game, bringing impressive talents to the screen.

Gal Gadot delivers one of the best performances of her career as Wonder Woman. It is not easy to capture the persona of an iconic superhero, but Gadot is perfectly cast in the role. She embodies the female icon through her expressive eyes and larger than life presence. Not only does she physically transform into the character, but she captures the essence of her personality. Wonder Woman is a symbol of beauty, strength and hope, and Gadot beautifully captures that.

Chris Pine is amazing in the role of Steve Trevor. Charming, likable and absolutely hilarious, he provides much of the comic relief in the film. It’s hard to not laugh at his well-time jokes or be amused by his antics. This could have easily been a one-dimensional character, but Pine brings a sharp sense of humor and unexpected depth to it.

At a running time of 2 and a half hours, “Wonder Woman” is a long but thoroughly entertaining movie. Director Patty Jenkins expertly handles the pacing, finding a balance between humor, action and story. However, while the film is undeniably entertaining, it is not without flaws. The weakest aspect of the film are the villains. Although there are three villains in the movie, they are underdeveloped and lack interesting personalities. It is disappointing when you take into account the memorable villains that the comic-book genre is known for.

Yet, as a whole, one can’t deny that “Wonder Woman” lives up to the hype. A return to form for the DC Cinematic Universe, it is popcorn entertainment that comic-book fans won’t be able to resist. As far as the year’s comic-book movies are concerned, they better suit up and get ready because it is going to be a tough job to top this one.

Nearly 80 years following the creation of an iconic character inspiring wonder in women, it’s a worthy tribute towards a heroine that has stood the test of time as a feminist icon whose powerful stories are deserving of celebration.
