Hitchcock has always been known for capturing a film visually, as well as realistically. Although some of his films are missing that visual feel, this is the complete opposite. Hitchcock has made a diabolical and often challenging masterpiece that represents his style of direction in all the right ways. The cinematography is brilliantly executed for this film. Each shot defines a character and it’s so good that it also takes the film to another level. This film is impressively made for its times too. It’s hard to believe how someone would make a movie so visually astounding back in the 50’s.
The performances are excellent. Farley Granger is realistic as a man stuck in a bad situation. He is so innocent that it’s hard not to root for him in the end. Robert Walker portrays a psychotic and crazy man with ultra-perfection. It’s not only his looks, but also his dialogue which is the key element to why he is so terrifying. Walker wasn’t well recognized for this film, but this is still one of the best performances he has ever given. The rest of the cast including Ruth Roman, Leo G. Carroll, and Patricia Hitchcock are fine in their roles.
The screenplay is yet another reason why this is such an entertaining piece of work. Raymond Chandler and Czenzi Ormonde have written a script that’s full of humor and just the right amount of intelligent dialogue.
“Strangers on a Train” is without doubt one of the best films that Hitchcock ever made. It’s gripping, intense, and highly entertaining. It’s also the perfect example of a typical Hitchcock film. A must-watch for any movie buff and unmissable for any fan of classical films.
