‘Fun but Forgettable’
Before I begin this review, I must admit that I’m not a fan of Star Trek. Although I’ve always been into science-fiction, I never got around to watching the famous tv series that first aired in the 1960’s. It may have missed my window of generation.
It wasn’t until J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot that I became aware of this global phenomenon. Not only did the film please life-long fans of the tv series, but it introduced Star Trek to a new generation of movie-goers. It was the kind of movie that everyone could enjoy, regardless of whether you were a fan of Star Trek or not.
Unfortunately, however, the same cannot be said for “Star Trek Beyond”. The latest instalment in the beloved franchise is a fun but forgettable blockbuster that falls short of its predecessors. Although it is packed with thrilling action, humor and heartfelt moments, one can’t help but feel disappointed by the latest addition to the franchise. The third film in the series is a mildly entertaining popcorn flick that lacks the magic of the original. While it is more action-packed and funnier than the previous films, “Star Trek Beyond” is an unnecessary addition to a franchise that is starting to lose steam.
Picking up after the events of “Star Trek: Into Darkness”, “Star Trek Beyond” follows the adventures of the Enterprise as they continue to explore the furthest reaches of space. This time, they are put to the test by a menacing enemy with a diabolical plan. Together, Kirk and his crew must summon the courage to combat this threat.
Right from the get-go, “Star Trek Beyond” immediately sucks you in and wastes no time in putting you in the midst of the action. In the hands of Justin Lin, this is an action-packed adventure that moves at a frenetic pace. Perhaps best known for “The Fast and Furious Franchise”, Lin is a director who knows how to stage exciting action sequences. It’s no surprise, then, that “Star Trek Beyond” features the most exhilarating action of the franchise. We’re not just talking about explosions, but creative action sequences that serve a purpose. If you’re looking for action, let’s just say that this film will not disappoint you.
Yet, while director Justin Lin is an expert at staging action he’s not much of a storyteller. Although “Star Trek Beyond” offers the most exciting action of the franchise, it is the weakest film when it comes to story. Not only is the plot messy, but it will be hard to follow for those who are unfamiliar with the Star Trek universe. There is so many characters, stories and mythology packed into the film that it becomes hard to keep up with. “Star Trek Beyond” is so concerned about getting to the next action sequence that the story is merely an afterthought.

At the same time, however, it’s a joy to see our favorite characters back on screen and played by a cast filled with talented actors. One of the few ways in which “Star Trek Beyond” improves on its predecessors is by giving each actor the moment to shine.
Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have gotten better over the years at portraying Kirk and Spock. Pine, who is always charismatic, delivers his strongest performance yet as the captain of the Starfleet. Not only does he lead his crew but he carries the film with his charming presence. Quinto, on the other hand, has truly transformed into Spock over the years. With sharp dialogue and a surprising amount of emotion, he proves once again that he is the perfect actor for this role.
Whereas the first two films focused squarely on Kirk and Spock, what is most refreshing about “Star Trek Beyond” is that it also gives the supporting actors a chance to shine. Whether it is the hilarious Karl Urban who gets plenty of funny one-liners as Bones, newcomer Sofia Boutella as the badass warrior Jaylah or Simon Pegg’s goofy Scotty, each star is given their moment in the spotlight.
Although it is a joy to see these characters return to the big-screen, it’s hard to root for them since they are up against a lame villain. Whereas “Star Trek: Into Darkness” offered one of the most menacing villains in recent memory played by Benedict Cumberbatch, the villain in “Star Trek Beyond” is far less memorable. Although he looks scary and has a frightening voice, Krall is a one-dimensional villain whose motivations are unclear. Idris Elba, who plays the part, does the best with what he’s given but it is not enough.
At a running time of 2 hours, “Star Trek Beyond” is a fast-paced but forgettable popcorn flick.
Fans of Star Trek will definitely enjoy the film, but others will forget about it as soon as they leave the theatre.
