“Looper” is written and directed by Rian Johnson. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Paul Dano, Jeff Daniels, and Emily Blunt. This film’s plot is set in 2072, the future. When the mob wants someone dead, the body is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired looper with a gun awaits. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a looper, who one day learns that the mob wants to ‘close the loop’ by sending back his future self (Bruce Willis).
Time travel films are very tricky to make because they need to be logical and understandable. The audience needs to be able to connect with the characters and grasp the message of the film. “Looper” has an interesting and intriguing premise that is justified through the vision of a great director. Its a fantastic movie that represents original, complex, and thought-provoking filmmaking at its best. Rian Johnson directs this film using an excellent cast and a brilliant screenplay. He’s astoundingly precise and devoted to telling a story, because the script for this film is great. Filled with charming, humorous, and often emotive dialogue, the screenplay enhances this movie to another level. The characters are fascinating and profound in the way they interact and react to certain situations. Steve Yedlin’s cinematography is visually stylish and unique.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt delivers a terrific performance as the younger Joe. He completely immerses himself into the role of a courageous man. Levitt’s screen presence and expressions are electrifying. His makeup is impressive, making him very resemblant to Bruce Willis. Willis, on the other hand, is superb as the older Joe. His acting is natural and never overbearing. The rest of the cast including Emily Blunt and Jeff Daniels is top-notch.
While the film is executed impressively, it’s not without its flaws. Some of the events that occur aren’t fully explained and seem irrelevant. Otherwise, this is still one of the best films of the year and decade. It’s a breath of fresh air that is recommended for all fans of the sci-fi genre.
During a time when Hollywood seems to be running out of inventive ideas that blow audiences away, it’s reassuring to be reminded occasionally that original movies such as “Looper” are still getting produced today.
