Whether it’s evil laboratory managers, suspects of murders or frustrated police-officers, Shannon has portrayed many strong characters. Given the number of movies he has made, making a top 10 list isn’t easy. Nevertheless, listed below are my favourite films made by an actor that deserves to be celebrated.

Released in 2017, Michael Shannon’s best movie captured the life of a mute woman falling in love with an amphibian creature. In the greatest role of his career, Shannon portrayed an evil laboratory director that abuses an amphibian creature in a scientific experiment causing despair. This is the actor unlike you’ve ever seen him before: intense, charismatic and emotional in his most memorable role. Shannon has spent most of his career playing likeable heroes with sympathetic personalities. With “The Shape of Water”, however, the actor took a huge step out of his comfort zone by playing a sadistic villain. Working alongside Sally Hawkins who is also outstanding, Shannon created a portrait of mental disabilities that’s compelling. For instance, the scene in which Strickland is aware that Eliza is going to escape with the grim creature from his lab causing despair is one of the finest moments of the actor’s career. Working alongside Leonardo DiCaprio who is also outstanding, Shannon created a portrait of a broken marriage that’s compelling. For instance, the scene in which John Givings questions Frank and April about why they are not moving to Paris causing despair is one of the finest moments of the actor’s career. In the most comical role of his career, Shannon portrayed a member of a wealthy family that becomes entangled in a murder mystery causing despair. With “Knives Out”, Shannon showcased rare aptitude for comedy that he hadn’t shown before in his career. Working alongside Chris Evans who is also outstanding, Shannon created a murder mystery that’s compelling. In 2013, Michael Shannon honoured the superhero made of steel in his movie “Man of Steel”. In the most villainous role of his career, Shannon portrayed a treacherous villain causing Superman to face despair. Michael Shannon hasn’t always made great movies earning recognition. While most movies the actor has made have been appreciated, a few have left audiences disappointed. Unfortunately, “Kangaroo Jack” falls into the latter category. Released in 2003, David McNally’s movie was a disaster. In the most shallow role of his career, Shannon portrayed a mobster searching for a kangaroo causing despair. Shannon brought his usual menace to the role, standing out as the bright spot of a bad movie. Although “Kangaroo Jack” is a disastrous movie, it honoured Shannon’s enduring legacy. As precious as money stolen by a smart kangaroo, it’s a spectacular reminder of an actor that hasn’t lost his abilities to captivate audiences making memorable movies I will forever value for inspiring me to make my film criticism dreams come true.
