“Good Will Hunting” (1997) – Ben Affleck’s Captivating Coming-of-Age Classic

Director: Gus Van Sant

Starring: Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Robin Williams

‘A Timeless Classic’

Teachers are powerful figures that shape students’ futures. Everyone remembers a time in their lives when they were guided by inspiring teachers. Professors are powerful figures that often pave the way for our futures. They often offer valuable advice guiding our lives in the right direction by serving as an endless source of inspiration. Through their inspirational worldview, teachers make our dreams come true.

Few films I’ve ever seen have captured the inspiring nature of teachers as powerfully as “Good Will Hunting”. Gus Van Sant’s coming-of-age drama captured the powerful roles teachers play in helping students with trauma. Released back in the 1990’s, it has stood the test of time as one of my favorite movies. This film is literally perfect: dashingly shot, brilliant acted, warmly directed, and profoundly written.

One of the strongest aspects of the film is the acting. Damon and Affleck truly mesmerized me in the film. Matt Damon delivered one of his best performances as a lonely janitor searching for purpose in life. He commanded every scene with a powerful presence. Robin Williams was equally remarkable in the role of a therapist mourning the loss of his wife. Williams reminded audiences why he was such a great actor before he tragically passed away. The acting was great; Damon, Affleck, Williams, Driver, and Skàrsgard were all perfect.

Another extraordinary aspect of the film is its writing. The dialogue is simply incredible. The script was true and understandable, because of the literal and profound combinations of powerfulness. The scenes of therapy are incredibly realistic, filled with conversations that are natural. The ‘young’ men deserved the Academy Award for their script.

Overall, this film is outstanding in every way and shouldn’t be missed by older teens and adults alike. The strong message in the end was out-rightly plausible and touching.

Nearly 30 years after its release, “Good Will Hunting” remains an engaging tribute towards inspiring teachers that motivate students to achieve goals they are hunting.
