Few superheroes have gained a fan following as huge as Spider-Man. Since the 1960’s, the hero whose has great powers come with great responsibilities has appeared in several movies. An icon in popular culture, Spider-Man has inspired several film adaptations. Each actor has offered a fresh interpretation of a web-swinging superhero with passion. Given the sheer number of actors that have played Spider-Man, making a list isn’t easy. Nevertheless, listed below are my picks for best Spider-Man actors that deserve to be celebrated.

1. Tobey Maguire

Spider-Man is a spectacular superhero that shaped my teacher’s identity. Several years ago, I formed a long-lasting relationship with a teacher that appreciated the web-swinging superhero. A massive comic-book nerd, he spoke fondly about a superhero that made him feel heard. His classroom was decorated with large posters of a superhero that he deeply appreciated. He would always praise a legendary hero whose great powers came with great responsibilities that shaped his identity. My teacher came to admire all the actors playing the web-swinging superhero, but his favourite star was always Tobey Maguire. Ever since his first appearance in 2002’s “Spider-Man”, Maguire has stood the test of time as the best actor to have played the web-swinging character. In the greatest role of his career, Maguire did an exceptional job of portraying an iconic web-swinging superhero carrying a heavy burden to bear. This is the actor unlike you’ve ever seen him before: intense, charismatic and emotional in the most meaningful role of his career. Maguire brought an emotional vulnerability to Spider-Man that was missing from previous iterations of the iconic character. Not only did Maguire capture the nerdish personality of Peter Parker but he embodied the charisma of Spider-Man. Maguire has always been one of those actors with the ability to communicate strong emotions through his body language, and his strengths as a performer are evident throughout Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Maguire shines in all the Spider-Man movies but his greatest strengths at playing the character are most evident in the first “Spider-Man”. For instance, the scene in which Peter Parker reluctantly accepts advice from uncle Ben that his great powers come with great responsibility is one of the greatest moments of the character in cinematic history. Ultimately, what made Tobey Maguire the greatest Spider-Man was his humanity. Maguire managed to pull off the difficult feat of turning a commemorated web-swinging hero into a relatable person with flaws anyone can identify with. A soaring tribute towards a groundbreaking superhero that has built a legacy that’s long-lasting, it’s a captivating reminder about a commemorated comic-book character spinning webs that is worth celebrating.

2. Andrew Garfield

It’s challenging to come to terms with the loss of a loved one. Several years ago, my family experienced grief when our uncle passed away without relief. As wise as Uncle Ben, he was a person that my family had grown to idolize. His devastating death causing my family to face mourning. It was easier said than done to cope with the loss of an uncle my family regarded with affection. Today, it’s safe to say I still haven’t moved on from the devastating death of a beloved uncle that passed away. Loss is a profound theme that is explored throughout the Spider-Man franchise. Each actor has done an admirable job of portraying Peter Parker’s grief after losing Uncle Ben but Andrew Garfield is definitely the best. In 2012, Garfield did an amazing job of portraying the web-swinging superhero affected by loss in his film “The Amazing Spider-Man”. Garfield offered a dark, intense and gritty version of Spider-Man that marked a stark departure from previous actors playing the character. Garfield has always been one of those commemorated actors that excels at playing grief-stricken teenagers, and “The Amazing Spider-Man” showcased his strengths as a performer. Ultimately, what makes Andrew Garfield a great Spider-Man is his empathy. Garfield brought out the vulnerable nature of Peter Parker as a teenager affected by loss. Garfield showcased emotional vulnerability as Spider-Man that audiences hadn’t seen in the past before. Although “The Amazing Spider-Man” is far from an amazing comic-book movie, Garfield’s commemorated performance stands out as the highlight of it. An amazing depiction of grief experienced by a commemorated comic-book character, it’s an awe-inspiring reminder of a hero that audiences treasure.

3. Shameik Moore

The teenage years are a time in life when everyone faces fears. I vividly remember the time when I was a teenager as if it were yesterday. Looking back in reflection, it definitely wasn’t a time of happiness. I was always anxious about failing classes, being bullied and finding social acceptance from peers in school. Most of all, I struggled to find work-life balance juggling responsibilities of being a student with spending time with my family. One of the traits that makes Spider-Man a relatable character is that he’s a teenager. Beneath the mask that he seeks to wear, Spider-Man is simply an ordinary teenager struggling to find balance between school and saving the world. Out of all the actors that have portrayed the comic-book character, Shameik Moore arguably did the best job of depicting Spider-Man’s struggles as a teenager. In 2018, Moore did an incredible job of portraying the celebrated comic-book hero facing adverse struggles in his animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”. Moore brought a childish innocence to Spider-Man as a teenager that was missing from previous iterations of the character. It isn’t easy to portray a hero through voice acting, but Moore succeeded immensely. Moore created a relatable version of Miles Morales as a teenage hero audiences could easily identify with. By focusing on Spider-Man’s struggle to find a healthy work-life balance, Moore created a portrayal of the iconic character that was relatable. For instance, the scene in which Miles Morales arrives late to a parent-teacher conference after saving the world as Spider-Man in “Across the Spider-Verse” is one of the greatest moments of the character in cinematic history. Ultimately, what makes Shameik Moore a great Spider-Man is his relatability. He turned a commmemorated superhero into an ordinary teen with problems whom kids can easily relate with. As strong as Miles Morales’ desire to become a superhero that’s animated, it’s a breathtaking reminder about a character that hasn’t lost abilities to leave audiences captivated which deserves to be celebrated.

4. Nicholas Hammond

One of the main qualities making Spider-Man a compelling comic-book character is his sharp sense of humour. Spider-Man has built an image of being a humorous hero that cracks jokes without concern for the damage. Ever since he was first introduced in comic-books several years ago, Spider-Man has always been a comical hero. He has always had tendencies for cracking jokes as he defeats enemies. Despite his strong sense of humour, few actors have captured this defining characteristic of the comic-book character. Out of all the actors that have played Spider-Man, Nicholas Hammond stands out as being the funniest. Although he may not be as well-known as the recent actors that have played the character, Hammond offered a fresh comical take on the superhero. During the 1970’s, Hammond offered a humorous take on Spider-Man that audiences hadn’t seen in previous movies. Hammond’s goofy, over-the-top and humorous take on Spider-Man introduced audiences for the first time towards the legendary comic-book character. Hammond stands out from actors that have played Spider-Man because of his sharp sense of humour. Hammond brought out the humorous side to the superhero that is true to the comic books. Admittedly, some fans consider Hammond’s portrayal to be outdated today. Some fans argue his comical style of being Spider-Man doesn’t translate well into the modern-day century. Although Hammond’s performance may be considered outdated today, there’s no denying that it forever changed the way in which the world viewed Spider-Man in a tremendous way. Ultimately, what made Nicholas Hammond a great Spider-Man was his humour. Hammond brought out a comical side to the hero that forever shaped understandings of the comic-book character today. A captivating portrayal of a commemorated superhero that’s comical, it’s a powerful reminder of a character audiences consider special.

5. Tom Holland

It isn’t easy to create a successful reboot of a famous superhero franchise. When it was first announced that a brand new reboot of Spider-Man was in production starring Tom Holland, several fans questioned whether it would be able to meet their high expectation. At first glance, Tom Holland didn’t appear to be the right choice for the role of the web-swinging superhero. When I first heard the news that Holland had been cast as Spider-Man in a new reboot, I doubted whether the actor could pull it off successfully. In my view, Tobey Maguire was the perfect Spider-Man that no actor could possibly live up to. Nevertheless, Holland’s performance as the web-swinging character proved to be a pleasant surprise. Holland brought out a comical side to Spider-Man that audiences hadn’t seen before. Unlike previous iterations of Spider-Man, Holland offered a fresh comical take on the iconic superhero. It’s tough to step into the shoes of an iconic comic-book character that audiences treasure, but Holland succeeded tremendously. It’s a role that gave the actor a chance to showcase his aptitude for playing comical teenage characters. What stands out most about Holland’s performance is his sharp sense of humour. For instance, the scene in which Aunt May is shocked to discover Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man is one of the funniest scenes of the character in history. Although Tom Holland did a great job portraying the character, his version isn’t quite on the level of previous actors. Holland’s reboot films lack the character development of the previous superior Spider-Man movies. Being a young actor with a bright future, Holland has a long way to go before he showcases his strength as the character. Nevertheless, his spectacular performance remains a soaring tribute towards the superhero. As powerful as webs Spider-Man seeks to weave, it’s a riveting reminder of a character that hasn’t lost his abilities to leave audiences captivated whose unforgettable movies I will forever treasure for inspiring me to believe that my film criticism dreams are possible to achieve.
