Director: Chris Butler and Sam Fell

Starring: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck

‘Astonishing Animated Achievement’

“ParaNorman” is directed by Chris Butler and Sam Fell. Its screenplay is written by Chris Butler. This film stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tucker Albrizzi, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Casey Affleck. Its plot follows a boy named Norman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who is misunderstood in his town because of his ability to speak to the dead. Being the only one with this ability, Norman must save his town from an old curse.

Stop-motion animation can be visually gorgeous if its done well. “ParaNorman” works incredibly because of astounding visuals, a magnificent voice cast, a terrific screenplay, and perfect pacing. This is one of those rare films that blends the genres of horror and comedy so well. Chris Butler’s script is the reason for it. Smart, original, and undeniably hilarious, the script plays a huge role in enhancing this movie to another level. Tristan Oliver’s cinematography provides this film with a visually delightful look. The visuals could not have been better. It’s hard to keep fine pacing in movies these days, yet the pacing for “ParaNorman” never falls short. Entertaining and engaging, it is perfect.

Kodi Smit-McPhee is highly convincing as Norman. He provides the character with a likeable and warm personality. Tucker Albrizzi is hilarious as Neil. Anne Kendrick does a great job as Norman’s sister. The character she voices is very stereotypical, yet that doesn’t affect this film negatively. The rest of the cast including Casey Affleck and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is top-notch.

Despite featuring many admirable aspects, this film isn’t perfect. The movie’s conclusion and subplots aren’t explained thoroughly. Otherwise, this is still one of the best films of the year. Generally recommended for kids (over the age of 9).
