‘Awe-Inspiring Animation’

If you’re planning to take your children to the theatre this weekend but are not sure about which film to see, your best bet would be “Kubo and the Two Strings”. Visually stunning, funny and surprisingly heartfelt, it is one of the best animated films of the year. Not only does it offer colorful characters that will keep kids entertained, but also a thoughtful message that adults will be able to appreciate.

Given that most animated films only appeal to children, what “Kubo and the Two Strings” offers is something special. In fact, most animated films if not all are strictly targeted towards young children. With colorful visuals, goofy characters and easy to follow stories, these films provide a joyous experience for children. Yet, while seeing an animated film is joyous for children it is more boring for adults. Unless the story is meaningful and teaches a lesson about life, adults are not so keen to see animated films.

Missing out on “Kubo and the Two Strings”, however, would be a terrible mistake. The latest stop-motion feature from Laika studios delivers a heartwarming story that will not only appeal to kids but also grown-ups. Set in ancient Japan, “Kubo and the Two Strings” tells the story of a young boy named Kubo who has magical powers. Kubo lives a quiet and peaceful life in a small village until a mysterious spirit from the past threatens to tear it apart. With no choice but to flee the village, Kubo sets out on an adventure to discover his family’s mysterious past.

Along the way, he seeks the help of a protective monkey (Charlize Theron) and a careless yet hilarious beetle (Matthew McConaughey). These strange, yet lovable creatures have personalities of their own. Monkey is a wise motherly figure who aims to protect Kubo from the dangers of the world. Beetle, on the other hand, is a wise-cracking fighter that tends to get into trouble a lot. It soon becomes clear that the two don’t get along so well. The back and forth banter between them makes for the film’s funniest moments. Even though “Kubo and the Two Strings” deals with dark subject matter, it is a family friendly film that offers plenty of laughs to keep kids entertained.

So much of the credit must go to the talented cast of actors that bring these colorful characters to life. In a cast that is filled with well-known celebrities, each actor does excellent voice-work. If I had to pick a standout, however, it would be a close tie between Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey.

Charlize Theron steals the show as the deeply caring Monkey who guides Kubo through his journey. Bringing an irresistible charm, charisma and humor to the talking monkey, Theron’s voice commands the screen. It is one of the most memorable voice-performances of the year.

Matthew McConaughey is hilarious as the fast-talking Beetle that assists Kubo on his journey. He is the film’s main source of comic relief, offering jokes at a rapid-fire pace. Beetle could have easily been an annoying character, but McConaughey is so funny in the role that you can’t help but root for him.

As is the case with most animated films, “Kubo and the Two Strings” is visually gorgeous and a feast for the eyes. You can tell that a lot of effort, attention and thought went into creating the visuals and it definitely paid off. Unlike anything that you’ve ever seen, the breathtaking visuals enhance the movie-going experience and transport you to another world. “Kubo and the Two Strings” is the kind of movie that you have to see on the big-screen to appreciate the visuals.

Yet, what is most surprising about “Kubo and the Two Strings” is that it will please not only kids but also adults. The film delivers an insightful message about family, death and the power of memories that strikes your heart-strings in a way few animated films do. Not only does it teach kids an important lesson about life, but it gains the interest of adults who may not be into animated films at all.

When an animated film deals with such mature themes, however, it isn’t going to be for kids of all ages. Although “Kubo and the Two Strings” is definitely worth watching, it may be too scary and frightening for young children. The scenes involving the creepy Sisters, in particular, may give children nightmares. Parents may want to keep these points in mind when deciding whether to take their kids to the film.

Nevertheless, “Kubo and the Two Strings” is a beautifully crafted animated film that is a must-see for the entire family. Kids will adore the colorful characters, while grown-ups will be swept away by the meaningful message.

Even if animated movies are not your cup of tea, this is an awe-inspiring achievement that you simply won’t want to miss for its sheer beauty.
