“Awakenings” (1990) – Robert De Niro’s Captivating Classic About Mental Institutions

Director: Penny Marshall

Starring: Robin Williams, Robert De Niro, Julie Kavner

‘An Awakening Achievement’

“Awakenings” is directed by Penny Marshall. Its script is written by Steven Zaillian and is based off a book by Oliver Sacks. This film stars Robin Williams, Robert De Niro, Julie Kavner, John Heard, and Penelope Ann Miller. The plot follows the true story of how an American neurologist (Robin Williams) discovered beneficial effects of the then-new drug L-Dopa. He administered it to catatonic patients. Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro) and the rest of these patients were awakened after decades of catatonic state and have to deal with a new life in a new time. “Awakenings” was nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Picture.

Penny Marshall, who has directed many funny films, took a massive risk by making this movie. It isn’t easy to make a film exploring illness and a mental hospital, yet Marshall manages to handle this with extravagant perfection. Her direction is good because it is highly realistic. This is based on a true story and Marshall manages to keep the film flowing with understandable emotions and realism. Steven Zaillian’s script is equally excellent. It allows the film to maintain a perfect balance between humor and sadness.

Robin Williams delivers a great performance as a troubled neurologist, who struggles because of being too shy. This is Williams at his definitive best; proving that he can handle much more than just comedic roles. It’s a glorious reminder of how great an actor he once was before his tragic death. Robert De Niro is brilliant as a patient struggling with illness. De Niro never goes over the top with his performance and that’s one of the reasons that he is so amazing in every scene he is in. He completely deserved the Academy Award nomination. The rest of the cast including Julie Kavner, John Heard, and Penelope Ann Miller are great in their small, but supportive roles.

Randy Newman’s soundtrack is wondrous and plays a major part in enhancing the film. The melodious work from this composer is unforgettable and matches the tone of this film too.

“Awakenings” is without doubt one of the greatest films of the 1990’s. It is deeply moving, undeniably satisfying, and highly unforgettable. The film has such a strong message that sticks with you long after you’ve seen it. It is strongly recommended for everyone.
