My Favourite Films of 2016 Ranked

2016 was an exciting year to be a movie-goer. Whether it was old-fashioned musicals, heartbreaking dramas or science-fiction entertainment, it offered something special for everyone. It was a particularly wonderful year for African American films, with two enlightening films offering a glimpse at the lives of these people.

Since I saw so many memorable films this year, it was not easy to pick 10 that stood out above the rest. Nevertheless, listed below are my personal picks for the best movies of the year. If you’re a movie-buff or following awards season, these movies are definitely worth your time and money.

1. La La Land

Although I’m not a fan of musicals, I was blown away by Damien Chazelle’s La La Land. A nostalgic tribute to old Hollywood musicals, it is one of those rare films that they simply don’t make anymore. Director Damien Chazelle has crafted a gorgeous musical that features charming performances from Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, unforgettable musical numbers and a heartbreaking story. It’s been eight years since I saw La La Land in the theater, but I still haven’t been able to stop listening to the music or watching the dance numbers. And this is coming from someone who does not like musicals. That rarely ever happens, and may be the greatest accomplishment for any film. It’s one of those rare movies that will inspire you to pursue your dreams no matter how unattainable they may seem.

2. Moonlight

It is unlikely that you will see a film that is as relevant as Moonlight this year. A heartbreaking coming-of-age drama, it sheds light on issues that are all too often ignored in society such as homosexuality, drug abuse and bullying. There have been plenty of coming-of-age movies made over the last few years, but most have focused primarily on the white male experience. What makes Moonlight exceptional is that it explores the experience of a gay African American. Through powerful performances, masterful direction and a profound story, this hard-hitting drama offers a peek at lives rarely seen in Cinema today.

3. Manchester by the Sea
A heartbreaking portrait of a man coping with a tragic loss, Manchester by the Sea is one of the most realistic films I’ve ever seen. It is one of those films that is so realistic that you believe that you are watching real-life unfold rather than entertainment. This is due, in large part, to the nuanced storytelling and marvelous performances from the actors. Casey Affleck delivers a deeply moving performance as a man overcome by a tragedy. Given its dark and depressing subject matter, Manchester by the Sea may not appeal to everyone. Nevertheless, it is a powerful film that is worth seeing for the masterful acting on display.

4. Arrival

In a year filled with superhero spectacles, unnecessary sequels and mindless entertainment, few films were as original as Arrival. Smart, thought-provoking and deeply moving, it offered a fresh take on the science-fiction genre. Through a thoughtful script, breathtaking cinematography and a mesmerizing performance from Amy Adams, Arrival leaves a lasting impression with the viewer. It’s the kind of film that stays with you long after you leave the theatre.

5. Hidden Figures

A true story that deserved to be told; Hidden Figures is one of the most inspiring films of the year. An eye-opening look at the lives of African American women in the 1960’s, it sheds light on a little-known chapter in history. Through powerful performances from its leading ladies and an eye for detail, the film celebrates the contributions of women that have been ignored in history. It’s a film that will leave you entertained, educated and eager to learn more about the inspiring women that contributed to NASA during the 1960’s.

6. Fences

It’s not easy to adapt a Broadway play to the big-screen, but Denzel Washington proves that it can be done in Fences. Both directing and starring in the lead role, Washington has crafted a gripping film that captures the essence of August Wilson’s play. It features two of the most powerful performances you’ll see this year from Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Washington reminds us why he is one of the greatest actors in the business, delivering a performance that will not be forgotten in the years to come.

7. The Jungle Book
Animated films are not my cup of tea, however, I absolutely adored The Jungle Book. A live-action remake of the beloved Disney classic, it featured unforgettable songs, memorable characters and gorgeous visuals. It brought back nostalgic memories of when I was a young child. Few animated films, if any, are able to accomplish that.

8. Sully

One of the more overlooked movies of the year was Clint Eastwood’s Sully. A gripping account of a real-life event, it was unfairly ignored during awards season. Tom Hanks delivered one of the best performances of his career but did not get the recognition he deserved. Although it got lost in the shuffle, Sully is worth seeing for its suspenseful re-creation of the Miracle on the Hudson.

9. The Edge of Seventeen
I’ve seen many coming-of-age movies over the years, but few have been as authentic as The Edge of Seventeen. This charming and heartfelt film captures the struggles teenagers face while growing up. Hailee Steinfeld, who stars in the lead role, is charismatic, funny and a joy to watch. Her outstanding performance makes The Edge of Seventeen a film that any teenager will be able to enjoy and relate to.

10. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Although I’m a fan of the Harry Potter series, I was skeptical when I heard they were making a spin-off. However, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them did not disappoint. A magical return to the wizarding world we’ve grown to love, it brought back a beloved franchise. It was a wonderful way to end what has been an amazing year for movies. 2016 couldn’t have ended on a higher note, especially for Harry Potter fans.
