Its plot, which is set in Virginia’s Prohibition-era, follows a gang called the Bondurant brothers (Tom Hardy, Jason Clarke, and Shia LaBeouf) who are threatened by the town’s new deputy (Guy Pearce).

John Hillcoat has made an admirable film that captures the essence of an intriguing era. With the help of an amazing cast, a fine script, and a fitting soundtrack, this is one of the best movies of the year. Hillcoat directs it using his vast knowledge of the time-period and magnificent cinematography. The Prohibition era is displayed with impressive costume and production design. The sets are fabulous, standing out amongst the great acting department. Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ score blends in perfectly with the tone of the movie. Benoit Delhomme’s cinematography is undeniably beautiful, enhancing this film to another level.

Shia LaBeouf delivers a brilliant performance as one of the main characters in this movie. He grasps the innocent and likable personality of his character with ease. An overlooked actor in many films, LaBeouf proves that he is much better when given the right role. Tom Hardy is terrific as Forrest Bondurant. He never goes overboard with his performance, which is subtle and heartfelt. Hardy is shaping up to be one of the best actors in Hollywood. This movie further increases his reputation as an actor. Guy Pearce is incredible in the role of Charlie Rakes, a chaotic man with only murder on his mind. With his unusual hairstyle, slick behavior, and ruthless personality, Pearce is one of the major highlights of this film. This performance may garner him an Academy Award. The rest of the cast including Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska is excellent.

Overall, “Lawless” is a praiseworthy movie that is definitely worth watching. Its script lacks depth and characterization for supporting characters, but otherwise this is recommended for fans of the Western genre.

Nearly 90 years following a lawless time when alcohol in high demand was considered priceless, it’s a timeless tribute towards a tumultuous time period in which alcoholic gangsters committed crime that were merciless.
