‘Superb Solo Prequel’
When it comes to iconic movie characters created years ago, it’s worth discussing Han Solo. Ever since he first appeared in 1977’s “Star Wars”, Solo has become one of the most beloved characters in cinematic history. A charismatic smuggler with a heart of gold, Solo was originally played by Harrison Ford. It was an unforgettable performance that made Ford a star and served as a highlight of the original Star Wars trilogy. Yet, one question that the original films never addressed was Han Solo’s origin story. How did he meet his companion Chewbacca and become the greatest pilot in the galaxy?
Now, nearly 40 years later that question is finally being answered. “Solo: A Star Wars Story”, the latest film in the beloved franchise, brings Han Solo’s origin story to life. It’s a fun but forgettable prequel that serves as an introduction to the iconic character. Featuring exhilarating action sequences, fine performances and sharp humor, it offers perfectly enjoyable entertainment. Yet, while it is undeniably entertaining, the film falls short of expectations. It lacks the strong character development of previous films in the franchise and suffers from a lengthy running time. That being said, it’s an enjoyable film that will satisfy fans that have waited for years to see Han Solo’s origin story.
Starring Alden Ehrenreich in the titular role, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” focuses on Han Solo’s life prior to becoming a pilot. Han is a smuggler who makes a living out of stealing artifacts. However, his life forever changes when he joins forces with a group of outlaws. With the help of his newfound companions, Han must embark on his most dangerous mission yet.
Its a space adventure that promises to offer plenty of colorful characters, sharp humor and breathtaking action.
When it comes to action, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” certainly delivers. If there is any director that knows how to perfectly stage an action sequence, it is Ron Howard. With the enthusiasm and passion of a fan, the director crafts the most breathtaking action sequences of the series. Although thrilling action is what we’ve come to expect from the Star Wars franchise, rarely has it been this well-executed. Breathtaking in scope and scale, the visually dazzling action transports you into the world of Star Wars. For instance, one of the most memorable action sequences in the film is the train robbery scene. Although small in scale, it raises the stakes and comes with real consequences. “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is worth seeing on the big-screen for its action sequences alone.
In addition to the action sequences, another refreshing aspect of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is its sense of humor. In a day and age when too many blockbusters are dark and serious, it is refreshing to see a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Unlike other more recent films in the franchise (ex. “The Last Jedi”), the film follows a lighthearted tone. It is filled with moments of laugh-out-loud humor that stem from the interactions between the characters. Much of the film’s humor centers on the relationship between Han and his companion Chewbacca. It is a sharp, genuine and hilarious relationship that proves to be one of the rare highlights of the film. After many years, it is a joy to see these iconic characters interact on screen.
These colorful characters are brought to life by a talented and well-chosen cast. In a star-studded ensemble, every actor gets the chance to shine and leave a lasting impression. Although the actors aren’t given much to do, they make the most out of their roles.
Alden Ehrenreich delivers a star-making performance as Han Solo. When it was first announced that Ehrenreich was cast in the iconic role, many fans doubted whether the actor would be able to pull it off. However, fans can breathe a sigh of relief because surprisingly Ehrenreich has done a remarkable job. With a charming persona and quirky mannerisms, he captures the essence of the iconic character. Although he only bares a passing resemblance to Harrison Ford, he manages to pay tribute to the legendary actor. It’s a marvelous performance that proves that the young actor has a bright future in the industry.
It is also worth mentioning the supporting cast, which is at the top of its game. As usual, Woody Harrelson is excellent in the role of commanding captain Beckett. Donald Glover is irresistibly charismatic and steals every scene he is in as Lando. And finally, Emilia Clarke is perfectly cast in the role of Han’s love interest.
Despite the terrific performances from the cast, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is ultimately not a film without flaws. Although the movie is undeniably entertaining, it does not deliver a satisfying origin story. The film barely skims the surface of Han Solo’s origin story, and hardly provides insights into the character. The screenplay, written by Jonathan and Lawrence Kasdan, lacks character development. Fans looking for an in-depth origin story of Han Solo may be disappointed, because the film does not offer it. If the filmmakers had paid attention to character development, it would have made for a far more satisfying origin story.
In the end, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is a fun but flawed addition to the Star Wars franchise. Fans will definitely enjoy it, and so will movie-goers seeking pass-time entertainment. Ultimately, your enjoyment of this film will depend on your expectations going into it. In this case, it is probably best to keep your expectations low.
Nearly 50 years following an introduction of a legendary space hero that travelled across starry galaxies solo, it’s a spectacular tribute towards an affordable icon which a long time ago gave science-fiction fans dreams to follow.
