‘Torturous Twilight Sequel’
One of the most superfluous franchises is the “Twilight Saga”. It consists of poorly scripted films with no message or meaning at all. The movies are only present to cater towards fans. “Breaking Dawn: Part 2”, the final installment in the “Twilight Saga”, picks up right where Part 1 finished. The birth of Renesmee causes the Cullens to gather other vampire groups in order to protect the child from the Volturi.
The first question that comes to mind when talking about the “Twilight” films, is why are they so necessary? Sure, there are fans that love these movies, but otherwise they don’t offer much for anyone else. The films are strictly targeted towards a specific group of people, which restricts other movie-goers from enjoying them.
“Breaking Dawn: Part 2”, the latest installment, is only marginally better than the previous film in this franchise. It’s a bearable movie that is deteriorated by a weak script, satisfactory acting, and a preposterous ending. The film lacks real substance that movies need at all times. Unfortunately, a few humorous moments and some gorgeous cinematography hardly enhance it.
Melissa Rosenberg’s screenplay only consists of ridiculous dialogue that seems as funny on paper as it is on screen. Lines such “We’re the same temperature now”, “You nicknamed my daughter after the Loch Ness Monster?” and “I didn’t expect you to seem so…you” are laughably bad. What’s even worse is the development of characters. Ever since the beginning of this series, there has been little to no development for the characters. The problem is, without characterization, why should one care for these characters, let alone root for them in certain situations?
Kristen Stewart delivers a passable performance. She has improved since her first appearance in this series and is convincing in the movie. It’s not Stewart’s fault, however, that her character Bella is poorly written. The screenplay negatively affects almost every cast member in the movie. The rest of the cast is adequate, but not entirely convincing.
In conclusion, “Breaking Dawn: Part 2” fails to add anything new or innovative to an already bleak franchise. It’s not an awful movie, but it’s not a good one either. The ending is mediocre, making the rest of the movie seem like a waste of time, while the screenplay is ruinous towards the film. The best way to describe this film is to say it’s a bad conclusion to a needless franchise.
Nearly 20 years after Stephanie Meyer wrote a book that fulfilled teenagers’ appetite, it’s a torturous reminder of a film franchise that has lost its sharp bite that doesn’t glimmer as brightly as vampires beneath the twilight.
