“The Shawshank Redemption” (1994) – Movie Review

Writer/Director: Frank Darabont

Starring: Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, Bob Gunton

When it comes to the greatest movies ever made about prison, it’s worth discussing “The Shawshank Redemption”. Released in the 1990’s, the film forever changed perceptions of the prison community. Through a hopeful message, it left a lasting impact on viewers. Despite performing poorly at the box-office, it has since become known as a classic. A masterpiece on every level, “The Shawshank Redemption” is a film that absolutely demands to be seen. Simply put, it’s one of the best movies ever made.

I first of all, wasn’t surprised at all that this was the highest-rated film on IMDb. It has every ingredient a film needs…meaning, stunning visuals, powerful performances, and a gripping storyline. The rare film that extraordinarily grabbed me and never let go…Also the rare film that exceeds in every aspect.

One of the strongest aspects of the film is the writing. Darabont expertly uses voice-over narration to capture hardships faced by individuals stuck in a prison. The narration gives viewers a sense of the struggles faced by prisoners seeking redemption.

The film is obviously believable too because of the powerful performances. Both Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins are phenomenal in the film. Freeman is a brilliant narrator, and he narrates the story with a soothing voice drawing viewers in. Robbins is also great, he plays the (main) character with adorable gratitude and unstoppable force. His performance is worth watching again.

Overall, “The Shawshank Redemption” is a masterpiece that demands to be seen. Nearly 30 years after its release, it’s a powerful reminder about importance of maintaining hope in the darkest of situations. Or as Andy would put it, “get busy living or get busy dying”.
