Whether it’s star-crossed lovers, majestic leaders or tormented soldiers, Firth has portrayed many characters. Given the number of movies he has made, making a top 10 list isn’t easy. Nevertheless, listed below are my favourite films made by an actor that deserves to be celebrated.

1. The King’s Speech

King George VI is a legendary figure of the royal family that impressed my father. At an early age, I formed a strong relationship with a father that admired a king with speech impediments causing damage. Fascinated with British history, he would always speak fondly about a big king impacting his identity. My father was always inspired by how the king overcame a debilitating speech disability to guide Britain towards victory. In the greatest role of his career, Firth portrayed a majestic king that suffered from a severe speech impediment that caused despair. This is the actor unlike you’ve ever seen him before: intense, charismatic and emotional in his most memorable role. Firth has spent most of his career playing great romantic heroes in period pieces. With “The King’s Speech”, however, the actor took a huge step out of his comfort zone by playing a legendary king that’s well-known. Working alongside Helena Bonham Carter who is also amazing, Firth created a commemorated portrait of a majestic king that’s compelling. For instance, the scene in which King George VI has an emotional breakdown questioning whether he will be ever able to prepare a commemorated speech causing despair is one of the finest moments of the actor’s career. Ultimately, what makes “The King’s Speech” Colin Firth’s best movie is its universal appeal. Unlike most movies about the royal family that are targeted towards a limited audience, it tackles strong themes that everyone would relate to. Nearly 20 years after the release of a classic film about a majestic king seeking to overcome a speech impediment that’s tragic, it’s a fantastic reminder of an actor that has built a great career by making memorable movies that are iconic.

Review: Arthur Newman - Slant Magazine

10. Arthur Newman

Colin Firth hasn’t always made great movies with worth. While most movies the actor has made have been appreciated, a few have left audiences disappointed. Unfortunately, “Arthur Newman” falls into the latter category. Released in 2012, Dante Ariola’s movie was a disaster. In the most shallow role of his career, Firth portrayed a depressed man with suicidal intentions causing despair. Firth brought his usual charisma to the role, standing out as the bright spot of a bad movie. Although “Arthur Newman” is a bad movie, it honoured Firth’s commemorated legacy.
